    Lessons learned:
    1. The rebated taped joint didn't work. It looked ugly and you lose some of the strength in cutting through a ply layer.
    2. The taped joint would be fine. Plenty strong enough and the tape is nearly invisible.
    3. The scarphed joint is definitely stronger and was surprisingly easier to do with a hand plane than the various electric gadgets.
    4. Dont scratch your head when you've got epoxy on your gloves.....

    I'll upload some pictures later.
I only did one rebated tape joint on the Argie 15: joining the bottom panels. Under paint, the ugliness was irrelevant and the joint is undetectable (though it took some sanding to fair it properly), but I'm curious how sanding a swale in the panels weakened it? After the amount of work I invested in the invisible joint, I decided scarfed joints are easier to do all things considered. However, I had already cut the panels and scarfs were not an option anymore.
Having owned and used our Argie for three years now, I'm not a fan of the Payson taped joint. Functionally it's fine. However, even though I was fastidious about feathering the tape, one can still faintly see the fiberglass tape close up in certain angles of light. I'd highly recommend beveling the edges of the panels slightly where they meet obtusely and visibly. This will allow you to truly fair the tape into the edges of the panels. Otherwise the tape will faintly remain visible. This is especially a potential problem near the bow and other areas where the panels meet obtusely.

Always thought the Payson joint was for people with limited confidence in their woodworking skills. Not to mention the butt jointing required to use two panels on boats like Bolger's Micro. Nothing wrong with a simplified system, but if you have the confidence to scarfe, then it is way better and really not very difficult. Jigs help..

I think I've pretty much decided to scarfe them. Glad i took the trouble to do bit of experimenting. I probably rebated too much of my attempt at a rebated taped joint. Took off a whole veneer which left the joint looking flimsy. Bear in mind this was just a practice piece and only 3 ply. I really appreciate the input from you experienced builders. Its good to have a friendly community to discuss things with.

So, I've cut out all the hull panels. And I've bevelled the edges and scarphed the two bottom panels ready for gluing . Not bad for a day's work. Got too dark to take pictures but I'll take some at the weekend.

Notice the strategic use of tomato soup and rice pudding to get those curves....

Soup cans as lofting ducks? Certainly. I liked using Warren Messer's idea: small hobby spring clamps. They all work.

First try at scarphing. Thought it wise to use a joint that will be hidden as a first attempt.

And finally I've started putting bits together. The pointy bit now meets the blunt bit, (if the resin sets).

So, i thought my scarphed joints looked rough and a bit flimsy once I'd sanded them and decided to put some glass over them. Nothing lost and I'll be happier if they're over engineered. Ready to start stitching but I'm away for a couple of weeks now.

Using ropes to hang the panels from the roof was really helpful as I was working alone.

With the panels meeting so well, you're obviously doing things right. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing the pictures.

Thanks Roy. I must confess I only posted pictures where the panels meet nicely. My new mate is going to be Mr Epoxy-Filler I think :-)

I did cut the 750mm groove on the under side of the aft cockpit sole. Used a hand router with a v shaped cutter set to 3mm. Seemed to work ok but the pictures didn't come out very well.

Before you use any epoxy make sure your hull is plumb and level because once you start to epoxy things together it's much harder to straighten things out. And, even more important, don't assume it's still plumb and level today just because it was yesterday. There's a nasty gremlin that works at night to move things around, hoping you won't notice!

Sounds like good advice. I've gathered from reading everybody's posts that this is a crucial stage and not to be rushed.

We used ropes to support the sides intil the stitches were in place to begin stiffening things up.
