Model T Depot Hack at Greenfield Village. The body would be a fun woodworking project!

I have not but my parents did. They did not love them. It was a lousy automobile for its time, but cheap.

The T was inexpensive...and very popular. Was it a lousy car? I guess the answer was subjective—if you bought one in 1927 it was hopelessly obsolete for many Americans, but if you were living in a rural area it was an auto that could go almost anywhere. It was adaptable, rugged, and extremely reliable—more than any other car available.

I have owned several Model A's but never a T. I saw a T once that I would have bought in a heartbeat but it was simply not for sale. It was a 13 or 14 touring that was totally original, incredibly low mileage and no restoration at all. Condition was beyond belief for a car that was 60 plus years old at the time.

I met the owner because I was told he had a spare tire cover for a 28 Model A but couldn't get that either. I used to own a 28 two door serial number CA 331 which was part of the first Canadian production run that consisted of 500 cars for the dealers' showrooms. The car had around 25K miles on it and is still well under 30K. The numbers match which is rare for a car that is 90 years old, it is a 28 but was built in fall of 27. Unfortunately, it was not as well looked after as the T but it still has the original paint on the body, not perfect but not all that bad. I gave the car to my cousin a few years ago. His interest in these things is far greater than mine although his mechanical abilities leave a lot to be desired.

What did it take to start a Model T in January in Illinois, or any other northern state. The horse had no such problems.

I know one thing—when I lived in Missouri my horse needed care in all kinds of weather...and the walk out to the barn was loads of fun during a driving rainstorm, or in freezing rain, and even when it was below zero (which actually happens occasionally in Missouri).

My Dad restored this 1923 Touring Car when I was a young boy. First year with electric starter. Here are my 3 younger brothers.

It always attracted the neighborhood kids whenever we went for a ride. That's me in the plaid shirt.

My Dad still regrets selling that car.
