I didnít want to sound greedy and suggested the 5 litre can which is what I normally use. Also exploring the possibility of duplicating another plaque which is missing for the previous first across the line win under WB previous owner.

Despite several torrential showers one which caught me rowing out to WB this morning I took a chance with the predicted Northerly just to good to pass up.
Due to a late start I pushed 2-3 knots of current with a mixed bag of sailing from charging along to ghosting around the river bends . Presently enjoying a beautiful sunny afternoon anchored up river at Tumbulgum in preparation for the annual Tum Passage held tomorrow after the recent cancelation due to a weather event.

The predicted wind and weather change came through late in the afternoon with Westerly’s winds which became lighter later on Sunday morning. I farewelled my peacfull anchorage complete with it’s sandy beach at 9.30 am and started back down river in very light conditions .
Further downstream .Stotts Island harpin bend proved challenging as always, I actually saw myself sailing this gauntlet until two State Emergency Services Services tinnies passed me, the first jeapordised my progress while the second following strategically 100m behind put WB on a shore mud bank.
The SE change came through just in time since WB had lost steerage several times as the following current became stronger than the wind. The passage required another 4 tacks into Chinderah after which I was able to loosen the sheets for a homerun, followed by some socialising once the 23 competing Dinghy’s arrived.

Proud to see Monique Smith skippering her Corsair 16 “Cheeky Lady “to a first place finish.
Monique bought her Corsair about 4 years ago without any sailing experience ,and I mentor crewed for her about 6 month.

And here I thought I scared all you guys of with my recent win at the Queensland Cruising YC.

All kidding aside I find certain events I pencil in my calendar and comes hell or high water I just do it. Otherwise boatownership becomes a luxury I just can not justify.

Yeah I’m working towards that. Replacing a section of cabin top on Thursday.

Looking for some feedback from any theoretical or real life experienced Gaff experts.??
I am looking to converting WB back to a Gaffer.

The proposed changes will see Wee Barkie with a new but slightly shorter Gaff rig measuring 8m while increasing her gaff size by roughly 1m.

The new rig will be have higher peak (just think Couta Boat) While also increasing sail area marginally with the foot measurment of 4880 remaining unchanged.

Below is WB original Gaff Rig dimensions.

I think you are headed in the right direction Tom. My dads boat was gaff rigged, he built her in 1974 and we sailed all over the place including 6 months in Tonga and Fiji. 23 feet on deck, 8 foot beam. 6 foot bowsprit. The boom overhangs the transom by maybe 10 inches. The gaff is the same length as the boom and high peaked, not quite a Gunter rig, but getting close, I'd say the line of the gaff is maybe 18 inches aft of the top of the mast. Would it be a 5 or 10 degree slope? She was originally rigged as a sloop but dad tried to convert to cutter a coup, emof times. Always sailed better as a sloop. Not quite as good to windward as modern boats, but that might be as much to do with hull form as the rig.

Despite a degree of angst in deviating from WB original Gaff rig design with a 500mm shorter mast and a substantially longer gaff the picture of your dads boat provides me with a degree of confidence in proceeding..
Nice boat Phil looks like a rather long mast do you know how long it is?

After having been on the lookout and coming close to purchasing a gaff rig in the past now I find myself in the unexpected position of having paid for a Couta boat rig and then finding the same rig 5 minutes from our house. Talk about lousy timing and what makes it worse I met the guy from around the corner several years ago.
Annyhow I managed to buy his old 14’ hollow gaff with a beautifully made saddle.

I will try to renegotiate the original Couta purchase today so wish me luck.
The mast is being shipped from The Wooden Boat Centre in Sorrento with a Couta Boat headed for Sydney where I will pick it up.

Sorry Tom, not sure how tall that mast is. Not very is the best I can do. It does look tall in that photo, but I seem to think that when it's laid on deck it doesn't overhang the ends of the boat by an awful lot, and it's a keel stepped mast.

No problem WB new rig will be deck stepped mounted on the existing alloy plate which will have a tabernacle welded on, in order to better service the rig.

Since I am planning to renew the rigging with Dyneema the next question will be shall I leave the Couta mast as is or add a set of spreaders?

Just finished moving Wee Barkie from her mooring to a jetty in preparation for the arrival of Cyclone Oma ,this system
is located 900 km of the Queensland coast and tracking towards Brisbane.
Oma is a slow moving system that has already caused devastation in around the Townsville area flooding 15000 homes.
Our forecasts are calling for 300mm of rain and winds strengthening to around 50 kn by the weekend.

WB inside position at the jetty which has 4 m pylons with all her lines doubled and chafe gear in place ,just in case things get really bad.

Thanks Phil Gary she did fine.
Only one boat broke her mooring a Fui 35 ,fortunatley winds had swung to the West on Sunday and rather than drifting through the fleet she ended up on the rocks.

Marine Rescue did a good job of getting her as well. I wasn't on the crew.

Back on track with WB gaff conversion just finished planing the gaff boom and the yard.
The yard represents an interesting build it is a two sectional hollowed pieces that are glued together. Since it came from a Swan River Couta Boat circa late 1800 I am curious what glue may have been used, providing it is original and not a later build.?
Originally I mistook the glue line for epoxy due to its light colour which should also rule out resorsenel glue.

Cobbling together a dinghy for WB loosely based on a Nutshell but shorter at 7 feet with redesigned building frames set up according to what looks right.

Rather happy with the first garboard plank which with a rather difficult angled scarf that fell right smack on top of the mid frame made it almost impossible to lay out the aft section due to the extreme curvature .

    [IMG][/IMG]I am just using a

left over combination of ply lying around ,henceforth the short scarfing of planks with the use of PVC glue.

I am and will make proper ones if it turns out to be a good dinghy Gary.

What was where the sails you found at at Peter’s place. I am still looking for a larger lug or gaff sail for my Tammie.
