    With peel-ply, you can get the weave filled in one step, and the result needs minimal sanding before painting.

    FYI to update this thread on outcome. I followed erster's advice and finished off filling the weave with faring compound and it helped a lot. I still did several full coats of epoxy only to get the fabric fully sealed but topped off the top third or so of the weave with filler epoxy and sanded back smooth. Came out nice and helped with filling in the small pin holes.
