    Default holland island house

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

The island community had 70 homes, stores and other buildings. It had its own post office, a two-room school with two teachers, a church, baseball team, community center, and a doctor. The islanders supported themselves mainly by dredging for oysters, fishing for shad and crabbing. Their fleet of workboats included 41 skipjacks, 10 schooners and 36 bugeyes, some of which were built on the island.

A similar situation happened at New Point Comfort lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay.

Once a part of the mainland, and complete with a lighthouse keepers cottage, and other dependency structures-----

New Point Lighthouse now sets more than a half mile offshore, and only stands today because of a massive investment in armor stone to protect the structure.

And Tangier Island on Chesapeake Bay has been fighting erosion for decades. Eventually they will lose the battle, but for now they prevail.
Even a fish wouldn’t get in trouble if it kept it's mouth shut.

I think you can add Smith Island to that (no relation), but I don't know which is under the greatest threat.
