    Default Hate Is Simple

    Hate is comforting.

    Hate is pure.

There aren't any questions, any worries about right & wrong, any quibbles about your motivations or goals. There are no doubts.
    -- Jim Butcher

Hate is so, so, simple. It is always with us. Particularly now... after so many years of deliberate divisiveness. And hate feeds on itself... grievance after fear after hurt after lie.

Dolt 45 served as a conduit and an amplifier. His damaged psyche and shriveled soul, sadly and pathetically needing to find validation... settled on a coping strategy of chaos, nihilism, self-promotion, and 'winning' at any cost.

    Don't let him do it.

    DON'T let him do it.

Forget the squabbles and quibbles with your allies. Focus on the movement embodied by tRump. Unite in a commitment to forestall his and their perfidy.

Oh, and anger is so energizing. Nothing like anger to pull one out of depression.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.

Sadly, people do most things based on emotions, rather than logic. Advertisers know that.

This is something my grandson learned in his marketing classes. I think most know this, even if we choose not to admit it.
Hope the door hits him on the way out.

Hate's really heavy to carry. Initially energizing to be sure, but eventually leading to depression and higher rates of self harm and suicide.

this is where there's all the nice sawdust and shavings to keep us warm, though. And it's cold outside - February still.

Oh, no. Not at all. There is no law - moral, physical, judicial, or psychological to keep anyone from both thinking about the Big Questions... AND living a life of sawdust, sand, water, and wind (in my particular case).

Just as there is nothing to say that you shouldn't fight for the Big Issues... AND also construct a life that makes the fight worth fighting.

In fact... the notion of a life well-lived pretty much demands such an approach. At least to my mind.

nothing funnier than a lurker lecturing "get a life".

not that there's anything wrong with lurking. some people read but seldom or never post, for their own legitimate reasons. but, lurking while preening loudly about being too busy to participate is the height of silliness.

eta: it can also indicate the height of "sock-i-ness". always a possibility with the closet critic.

it's also a way to derail the subject when somebody gets uncomfortable with the topic. I have noticed that newboatgal does this a lot. Soon as a topic starts to delve deep, she pops in to kill it.

To get back to the subject, while hate is a heavy thing to carry, it's also like a potent drug. A drug you unfortunately need more and more of to keep going. Like in Starwars, "hate makes you strong" but it also exacts a toll as hate will eventually turn to self loathing as it consumes it's host.

    Introduction

In a comprehensive review of classic as well as more contemporary conceptualizations of hatred, Royzman, McCauley, and Rozin (2005) described hatred as the most destructive affective phenomenon in the history of human nature. These destructive implications of hatred on human life have been widely documented in several recent contributions (e.g., Halperin, 2011; Levin & Nolan, 2015a, 2015b; Opotow & McClelland, 2007; Sternberg, 2005; Sullivan, Ong, La Macchia, & Louis, 2016). This literature shows that hate has been defined in a variety of ways, a problem characteristic for emotions in general. Hate has been considered an emotional attitude (Ekman, 1992), a syndrome (Solomon, 1977), a form of generalized anger (Bernier & Dozier, 2002; Frijda, 1986; Power & Dalgleish, 1997), a generalized evaluation (Ben-Ze’ev, 2000), a normative judgment (McDevitt & Levin, 1993), a motive to devalue others (Rempel & Burris, 2005), or simply an emotion (Elster, 1999). Despite these different views, it is remarkable that there is little theorizing about hate, although the topic seems to be getting increasing attention in recent years. Even more surprisingly, there is not much in-depth empirical research on hatred, especially not in psychology. Interestingly, other disciplines, such as sociology, political science, communication, and social justice research have provided interesting new empirical data, in particular on hate crime and hate speech.

A long history here. Here's a cartoon supporting the original Know-Nothings. Zoom in and read the captions, it's - well - interesting.

The movement is based on something more fundamental and dangerous than mere hate. People can use their abilities to survive and better their condition, but it requires self-discipline. Self-discipline creates resistance. The energy has to go somewhere besides friction. So it goes into a building a personality and world view in which there is no more intellectual self-discipline then absolutely necessary, which is a much lower amount than we flatter ourselves to believe. But the energy has to go somewhere.

It was Durnik, I believe, who posted a link to an article about the game aspects.

Like many conspiracy theories, QAnon supplied a good-versus-evil narrative into which complicated world events could be easily incorporated. “Especially during the pandemic, Q provided a structure to explain what was going on,” said Mike Rothschild, author of “The Storm Is Upon Us,” which documents QAnon’s rise.

And it offered believers a sense of meaning and purpose. “We want to believe that we matter enough [that someone wants] to crush us,” Rothschild said. “It’s comforting to think that the New World Order would single us out for destruction.”

A big part of what made it novel was that it was interactive, allowing its followers to take part in the hunt for clues as if they were playing a video game. Social media algorithms, built to capture and keep consumers’ attention, helped expand the pool of hardcore believers by leading curious individuals to online groups of believers and feeding them fresh QAnon conspiracy theories.

Another aspect is the rejection of the ideal of a liberal education, which is based on certain moral judgments. "Liberals" avoid them to the point of complete ignorance and even a halting, self-doubting, tortured rejection of them ("Is property a fundamental human right?") because they intuit that to proclaim them requires one to defend them, and they are cowards. Seeing this, Reds are building a culture based on their own morals. Same as with our previous fascist surprise, in the 20th century.

"Hate" is not an adequate term for describing the phenomenon, let alone responding to it.
