    Re: The UNA Project

Did you figure out a system to lace and lash the sail on expeditiously? Looks like from the nice carriers ( something most people don't think about) that the spars travel bare. Look forward to seeing her at Mystic. Will she be overboard?

She will be laced with quarter inch Hemplex from R&W Rope in New Bedford. Alas, my sailmaker is buried in work... the sail is not available or even started. She'll spend the weekend on the trailer.

What a shame! Well, at least she won't have to soak up.

this shot really shows off the curves o her hull, and is suggestive of a possible whitehall/ ships boat type ancestry... Nice work.

Damn, we were all hoping to go for a sail. She needs some drum rolls and a piper for launching. Bring her up to the Small Reach Regatta or the Maine Boats Homes and Harbors event which is featuring small boats this year if she hasn't been over yet. Anyway, back in the day a sail this small may well have been laced on spars with small stuff. I have a roll of 3 strand marline which is a fat 1/8 that would be just the right stuff. I wonder where I got it. I tried quarter inch with some of my sails and it just looked out of scale. Since I'm not trying to do this with trad materials I pretty much use sailmakers 1/8 leech line with is just right for these little sails. In Hempex you could use 4mm which would be plenty strong enough.

Magnificent work! I also have to say that looking at the real hull, I know understand better why the Brits found them too hard to handle downwind in strong breezes and the Solent chop.

I am expecting some moments of "white-knuckle" terror.... Hopefully, an excuse of "this is new to me" will excuse whatever disaster I find myself in.

                    Re: The UNA Project

Sailing it will likely be somewhat like Lasers and Finn's downwind. Keep the gaff from going ahead of the mast, heel her to windward, and it is really really important to keep the end of the boom out of the water. Some of the little racing boats of that era had a hand on the topping lift, the 'twine sharp' who could heave mightily on the lift if the boom tip was about to get wet.

Has anyone got a Sandpiper sail they can loan him?

Wow, what I thread I totally missed. Your fellow MA boat builder, Richard Honan, just told me to check out UNA at the WBS, (and to ask about a "lemonseed"?) and here I find it. I look forward to seeing you and it in Mystic. He thinks you named it after a slice of pizza.

Will be great to meet you, despite your affiliation with Mr. Honan.
