Does anyone know of a source for decals/tranfers that are Native American (Inuit) in style. I would like to get some for my husband to put on his kit-built wooden kayak. I am sure I saw something like this in a kayaking magazine once, but maybe it was a custom, handpainted design. Thanks!

A local builder here uses stain and 'paints' them on. He doesn't appear to have stencils. I think he free hands them.

I've heard that these folks have them (Northwest Coast Indian designs), though I didn't see them on their website. You could call or e-mail them and see.

    Try asking here-

    http://www.qajaqusa.org/cgi-bin/Gree...orum_config.pl

    It's a greenland-style kayaking forum.

    or here-

    http://www.kayakforum.com/index.shtml

it's sponsered by a kayak designer, but has some pretty knowledgable posters- there was a thread recently about applying decals and such to kayak decks.

You can buy decal transfer material from a company called MicroMark, and make your own decals using your handy dandy ink jet printer. You can also print with a laser printer onto rice paper and apply that under the glass on the deck or sides. Another method I've seen is to apply one coat of epoxy to the bare wood, paint on the icons/tattoos and then continue with the glass/epoxy/varnish cycle.

    Try this:
Print out your favorite design from the computer (onto regular paper). Tape the design down on a drawing board and Tape wax paper or plastic wrap over that. Now tape rice paper or light tracing paper over that and paint in your design (use a paint intended for lettering). When dry, just cut out the design and carefully epoxy it onto the deck taking care to work out ALL of the bubbles. When cured, the paper will have all but disappeared from view. The advantage of this method is obvious; screw up and you can simply start over without messing up the boat.
