I know that the old car hobby has a lot of supply houses that specialize is old obsolete parts.

Does any know if there is anything similar for outboard engines? I have a 1981 35 HP Evinrude and a lot of the parts are no longer available from the authorized dealers. Perhaps there are people who buy up old outboard motor inventory or who make replacements parts?

By the way, I know that the prices charged by authorized dealers are mighty high for parts. I can understand that if the part is pretty specialized and limited to a few models.

However, I was pretty amazed when they charged me $4.00 for a single #10 ss washer and $4.80 for a 5/16" ss lock nut. They maintained these were special in some way. I did some checking and the only thing special about the lock nut was that is was fine thread instead of coarse thread. I bought some more at Ace Hardware for 40 cents.

Anyway, any suggestions on fixing up the old motor would be appreciated.

Wow, I would not even have consider '81 old! My father has a Johnson 6 HP that is a good 10-15 years older than that and that is finally getting too worn out to be worth fixing...

    Good luck!

No prob. Around here there's Dock's Marina, 973-347-0090 or Lentine Marine in Flemington NJ. I'm sure they'd mail what you need, but I doubt you need to go that far. Just look around, there are plenty of places that supply parts for old OBs, and 81 isn't all that old anyway.

My 5-horse green Merc was built in '52 and still starts on the second pull. I remember when some sort of conventional wisdom was that Mercury OBs were "good for racing, but not reliable enough for average users." What?

I've used this place for parts before http://www.boatingsolutions.com I was out running a 1929 Johnson last weekend. I guess that would be considered old, well older than me anyways.

I wouldn't consider a 1981 outbard as old. I run 1957 Johnson 35 HPs on my '57 Thompson Sea Lancer. I am using it about three to four days each week.

Twin City Outboard in Shakopee, MN has thousands of old outboards plus even more parts. 952-496-1951

    Try: www.oldmercs.com and also: http://www.fiberglassics.com/outpost/

Considering that Bob Myers' Johnson was made before the Marston Seagull, later to become the British Seagull was invented (1933) I think Bob wins.
