Boatyard needed

Hello to all.

I haven't posted to the forum in the last couple of years, just too busy. Unfortunately I've also been too busy to work much on restoring my 1961 H28. It's been sitting in my side yard and I haven't had the time to do any work on it this year at all. Trying to build a business took all my time.

I'm looking for suggestions on a boatyard in southern California that can make it as beautiful as it once was. There's an extensive amount of work to be done, some frames need replacing, planking screws need to be replaced below the waterline, deck has to come off and be replaced, deck house replaced, and on and on.

A good friend suggested I have it brought up to Port Townsend, WA, where all the facilities are handy. Good idea, but it's not exactly local enough I can visit regularly. I know there's a yard in Ventura that can do it. Are there any others that can take on this job?

Can't remember the name, but there was a story about the guy in Ventura in Wooden Boat last year (I think). Try doing a search for back issues. Or you could bring it to Monterey and pay me a whole lot of money and I'll do it!

F, Try email info@kohlercraft.com. C. F Kohler at Kohler Craft on Shelter Island Road, Point Loma, San Diego. This is the last remaining wood boat yard left in LoCal, I know of, outside of the Ventura suggestion and a yard in Chanel Islands Harbor, Oxnard. Check out C, F.s site, wood boat restoration is a good portion of his work, and he has a photo spread under restorations, PCs, Scamp etc. Sounds like what you might need would be reallll expensive no mater where you do it, except maybe India or Thialand, and thes type jobs have a habit of expanding in scope, so half way through you might wish you had built a new one with saved hardware etc. and then you would have a new boat not a 40s ish one. Luck whatever you choose, cbob

Frank, There's also the choice of the yard in Ensenada. No experience with them, but they have a website, with rates etc., I can't remember their name but they advertise in L 38 sometimes and should be in the Marine Yellow Pages. They are closer to M.V. than P.T. and you only need one shipwright. cbob

Frank, Almost forgot, Harvey Swindall who built BLOODHOUND at Bates Boatyard up 33 several miles East and up the river from Ventura. I don't know where he's located in the Southland, but recall he's Custom Yachts or something like that. cbob
