Burnt out rechargable drill charger ?

To all you wooden boat people , who probably own a rechargable drill.....
I have a Craftsman 9.5 volt drill , with 2 batteries and a 12v charger. I've always understood that these batteries have "memories" , snd should be totally discharges before trying recharge. well , I
totally discharged one of my batteries , plugged it into the charger , and ZAP , burnt out!!! A new charger is only $39.95 ,
but I'm a little confused ...Did I do something wrong ?????

well to start with.....
1) Modern batteries do not have "memory" as such and
2) totally discharged means at a controlled rate for a specified period of time with a specified resistance load to full CONTRLLED discharge which would have been detirmined by the batterie current drain caused by the motor in your drill....so..
3) how did you discharge the battery?...did you......
4) short it out and wait for the wire to burn through?

or

5) some other way not intended by nature for Ni-cad batteries.......

Tom, the 12 volt charger comes with the unit...sort like a 110 volt charger....there's usually a regulator inside that charges the battery...this one may be defective....

Thanks, As my wife would say, I stand approved. Did not understand that the charger used 12V DC as a source.

Don't know if this applies but leaving a battery charger plugged in between charging has lead to battery damage for two friends of mine. I always unplug mine between uses, just like the manual says.

Ever notice that they sell a "Charger/Battery Combo Pac" .... Must be something to it.

I threw away a perfectly good Craftsman cordless drill after having the charger burn out. Couldn't find a replacement for under $40, and couldn't justify spending that much for the charger when the drill cost $60 new. So Ii bought a Mikata, and tossed the Craftsman. Then I saw where a boat owner had taken his old cordless and hooked wires to the contacts, then to a plug to fit in one of those cigarette lighter recepticles on his plastic boat. DOH! I could have had a great drill for my truck!

Free to good home, Stanley 6 volt craft-type cordless drill in new condition with charger that (apparently) works, at least the light lights up - here's the catch. the 6V battery won't take a charge, sat uncharged for years. Can't find a replacement battery, and this is of no use to make boats of any size scantlings. I have a panasonic with two metal halide batteries, and this thing will spin a spade bit through heavy timber. anyone have an idea on getting a stanley battery can have it. Mitchell in CT

www.digi-key.com has all kinds of batteries.anyone with a dewalt 12v unit pay attention...the nice folks at dewalt have a recall on chargers and batteries that have been fried with these defective chargers, call your local dewalt sirvice center for the serial numbers that are covered.
