I thought there was a high end sports shop in Vancouver that would be of help. Cant think of the name, but they were into all outdoor sports. Had a catalog, but not at hand. Not much help, sorry.

Skippers, Will my Sierra sheers cut Kevlar ... or what do you suggest?

I need to make 11X 3" cuts. This is all, otherwise I would think about buying air sheers (they do look expensive) but not needed for a once off job. I'm using tape hopefully if it is avaiable in 3".

Or would it pay, to have it cut into 10, 10'x3" strips, from patterns (the kevlar is to fit between slightly curved strakes) when I order the Kevlar? I've not used Kevlar ... bullet proofing is needed in the cockpit of the boat that I'm doing, She is fragile.

Cheers.

Kevlar is just plain difficult to cut. If you need 3" strips, tape is far and away the best way to go. Also, once epoxied into place, any sanding into the kevlar is going to "fuzz" the kevlar.

It is good to be forwarned MJC, Kevlar isn't cheap. $60 sq m was the quote from Auscraft Marine here in Oz. If I buy what I need, in one peice. I'll investigate the tape, I've put this job off because of the cutting ... there is no excuse now. Thanks. So any 3" x 100' roll of Kevlar tape, for less than $180 now, will be a win.

I'm back, the 3" tape is $220AU, . I'd better go and check the thickness if the tape, again.

I wouldn't be too worried about cutting Kevlar(ours was 5 ounce).I bought special fiberglass scissors and cut it OK as long as someone held it in tension ,or in other words so it isn't hanging slack. Then my wife bought some dollar store scissors for under $2.with stainless steel cutters. They worked almost as well as the expensive scissors!
We had alot more trouble cutting 18 ounce biaxial fiberglass.

JM, stop it! ... you are making it sound far too easy, Skipper, .

The thought of cutting through 100' of Kevlar made me think that I was well up against it ... now you have thrown the cat amongst the pigons again.

I might have to go and cast the oracle ... and ask the oracle about air sheers.

Tape on both sides of the fabric and then cut with regular sissors.

This may or may not be a good price

3" Kevlar Tape (5 mil) 50 Yards $129.00

George it is a good price. Advanced Composites has a store here in Canberra, that will work well. They are the people here with the best prices and easy to visit. It is a shame they are closed today, Sunday, arrhh!!!.

Warren ,I do hope you don't have to cut those strips.
I forgot to mention that it is critical when cutting Kevlar or fiber glass that the scissors be kept sharp and in the Kevlar case it helped alot if one person held it tight!
