Drill bit boxes

I've been trying to find a metal box for storing drill bits similar to below:

It seems that the only way you can get the box is to buy the set. I don't need the set but I do like that type of box and I could use it to store the bits I already have. If anyone knows a source please let me know.

McMaster Carr has exactly what you posted the photo of. Cost $28.45 to $32.36 dpeending of drill size.

Thanks for the rapid reply. Went to the site ordered the Master combination case and it is on its way.

McMasters has been my secret source of boating stuff for a long time now. They have all kinds of good stuff; shackles, clevis pins, cotter pins, fasteners, chain, wire rope, etc. And it isn't labled "marine" so it doesn't carry the usual markup. BTW a boating friend of mine says he must have a marine wife because she costs twice as much to maintain as other wives.

That's easy. 60 + 26 = 86 . Yup, they are for 86 bits.

In the U.S., at least, there is a range of bits measured in fractions, 1/64" increments in the smaller sizes. And another range of numbered and lettered, 1 being small 60 big, A a little bigger still and Z a lot bigger. I've not used them in woodworking. I think they are measured in thousanths however.

Now as to [i]why[/] they are numbered and lettered, weellllll, sorry. Ain't got a clue.

The letter and number size drills date back to some time in the 1800s. I don't know all the history, but do know they were systems which provided intermediate drill sizes between the fractional sizes. The number sizes in particular supply a lot of very small drills - look up the tap drill and clearance sizes for #1x64 threads (53), for instance. Some of the number drills are related to wire sizes. If you go through the table of American tap drill sizes for machine screws, you will notice several which use either number or letter sizes, particular in small sizes. Someone into the history of machine tools in America can doubtless supply more (and more accurate) info. Possibly these were invented when the twist drill was invented (1864 by Morse), but I don't know.
