Since you're in Marblehead, I'd first try the commercial fishing supply places, the really scruffy old-time ones down on the waterfront in Gloucester.
McMaster-Carr lists manila in 2", but they may not sell less than their standard length of 50 ft - about $2.50/ft. http://www.mcmaster.com/
Search on "Manila rope".

These folks below list nylon in up to 3", Manila in up to 2", and Polyester/polypropylene in up to 2-5/8" I don't know if they'll sell short lengths.

Of course, for twelve feet, you could lay up (twist up? what's the verb I want?) a cable from 1" rope; fifty feet of 1" might come out close to twelve feet, but would not quite be 2" in diameter.

You might consider that "Sandy" is such an icon that you daren't change anything, but i've slowly become convinced that the "gunwale guard" is the best solution available today. The heavens might not part. If secured with screws and cup washers, it stays on. Cushioning is nice, too. It is now made in a (tasteful) off-white polyester, so it should last for a very long time.

Beautiful boats there Annie & Sandy, by the way.
My question was not to imply that the original should be preserved at all costs. The thought was that if there is somethng in the way the fender deteriorates, the need for periodic replacement might lead to buying enough material for the next time or two.

When the gunwale guard was made of cotton, it'd rot/wear out in about seven seasons. I hope that the polyester stuff will last longer.
