Default W H Hand Jr Planing Launch in NZ "My Girl"

After completing Wairiki over 4 years ago, I have the bug again, this time I think I must be feeling my age, I purchased a launch
She is requiring a fair old bit of work still, but, not so much as previous projects, brief overview below.....

"My Girl" is a William Hand design, built locally in Auckland by R Lang in 1924, she's a planing launch and originally did over 18 knots with a 90hp Scripps engine.... but, on with the pics....

    This, as I purchased her....

This is what she will go back to:

as I did with Wairiki, (www.wairiki.co.nz), I have started www.my-girl.co.nz to record the progress.... (the hyphen is important!)
and i will post milestones up here

and then the aft dodger cabin thingy, gross and it was about 5'5" high which was never going to work with 6'3" of me..... Also the aft deck was rotten!! So off it came, 2 new beams etc required to repair damage where the live bait well was installed... (FFS why!)

debating still whether the boarding platform gets to stay, it's not offensive but it isn't terribly strong...

I loved that flybridge - you could walk directly from the saloon to the platform without getting wet on a rainy day

This is going to be one of my favorite projects here. Great to see a rebirth of an original William Hand design. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Welcome to the launch club Jas - I'm also going to enjoy this project. 18knts is just not on, Raindance will need a tow.

She'll be a beauty! The ribs that I can see have a really wicked curve where the side transitions into the bottom. Any of them cracked?

the engine is likely to be a used 130hp volvo AQAD31, mainly because the price is right and 130 seemed enough, currently has a bmc commander 65hp which is in a slow transition process to mooring block....

Very nice, but not exactly your typical 'planing' hull. Even the old pic appears to be more of a semi displacement mode. Is that down turn of the bottom at the stern per plan or is that a bit of hogging that needs to be taken out?

Ooops, I see now that it's probably just the painted waterline.

Beautiful boat, Jase. Looking forward to the full report!

What may i ask is the beam / length ratio?
    Also what weight is she?
Must be an early planning hull.
Interesting to compare with European planning hulls of the time?

Long time between updates, but, i've come a fair old way..... condensed version below....

old engine room floors are out,

Not all of them came out intact

but the new ones fitted well....

removed the boarding platform in preparation of starting ribbing....

removed every second rib on the port side cockpit

"new" old engine found for the project and given a quick tart up

ribs started steaming in, NZ red Beach...

one step fwd, 2 back, the planks in the engine room have succumbed to the battery acid they were subjected to earlier in her life.

    ribs in and riveted

Very nice work,.... It looks like you are really doing her justice.
Maybe I missed it, but have you decided on her layout? Will you be going back to her original configuration?
