Default 2015 Anacortes Pull & Be Damned Small Boat Messabout--May 16th

It's not too early to mark your calendars, folks. Last year's event was a blast, so we've already started scheduling the next one, for the congruent Saturday of May 16, 2015.

Just like last year, the Messabout will be held at Seafarer's Memorial Park in Anacortes, with both dock and beach space for the taking. All small, beachable sorts of boats are invited from canoes, kayaks and SUP's to the more substantial rowing gigs and wherries--not to mention the likelihood of a sail & oar boat or two making an appearance. And after the main event on Saturday, I wouldn't be surprised if some of us might head on out for an overnighter again.

Lee Baxter took some of the best pictures of last year's event, so I'm shamelessly re-posting them now:

    \

And Joel Bergen has more pictures and even some videos of dock-walking and launching boats from the hoist on his blog here.

So pencil it in, get yer trailer tires pumped up, and come on down! I absolutely guarantee we'll have awesome weather again.*

*Guarantee subject to change in regards to actual weather conditions on day of event. No warranty is expressed or implied. See Manager for details.

The video of the Sail&Oar dockwalk is great! So many beautiful boats. What is the bright-finished Cat-Ketch rigged boat (or cat-Yawl?) seen about halfway thru? A Coquina? Looks like Mr. McMullen at the helm?

I thought you had a Salmon Wherry or something in progress? Come on, you've got like five months. Easy peasy.

You couldn't move this back a couple of weeks, to better coincide with another event out of Port Townsend?

That's probably Nutmeg, which is a Coquina built Jay Smith style, with all of the scandahoovian details like rose-headed rivets and trunnels and Norse-style oars and stuff.

What event are you talking about? <totally innocent>

But no, this is my local, hometown thingie. I'm really not in charge or anything, I'm just a volunteer participant. The event is hosted by the TSCA and the Anacortes Small Boat Center. Plans for this have been in place since before the turn of the year, so nothing's changing now. Besides, this one is an all-inclusive, family-friendly event, welcoming of novices and old salts alike. It's a local community small boat fair. That other business is a daredevil, fool stunt, for people with more grim determination than common sense. It's a different demographic, you see?

You should not be allowed to attend any more small boat events (or post in the bilge) until your boat is complete.

Tim's got a point there, Gerard. Do you need us to show up at your house some weekend with pockets full of sawblades, spokeshaves and screwdrivers and stage an intervention?

I will send a note to Scot informing him of Gerard's "situation." I would recommend that Gerard be banned until launch day.

It's for Gerard's own good, Pat. Even he would agree, I'm sure.

Meanwhile, too bad you sold your faering, cause now you no longer have any credible excuse to show up, and will have to manufacture some nefarious subterfuge. Oh well, at least try to make it outwardly plausible. We have a fašade to maintain.

The Oselver has a better chance of being usable with Marty owning it than it would otherwise. He said he means it to be ready to use by summer. And, the boat is 21ft. long...big enough for an entire girls' softball team. So...who knows, you may yet see me.

Boats that have checked in that they expect to come so far include:
    Sooty Tern
    Acorn 15
    skin-on-frame peapod
    skin-on-frame whitehall
    2 Aleut Baidarkas
    Eastport Pram
    Auklet
    traditional Norwegian faering
    16' Swampscott dory
plus the rowing gigs from OARSS

By all means, check in and add your boat to the list if you think you'd like to come. I know it's still several months away, but it's never too early to start when you're trying to make plans with the Port.

I'll be there with my Harrier. Looking forward to this. Not sure I can handle another night of James drunkenly singing Disney songs while staggering around the beach at Saddlebag, but I'll be there all the same.

No worries, Andy. This year's concert will be all instrumental, starting with a few dance numbers on the Driftwood Marimba, and then progressing to the world debut of my new Concerto for Kelp Trumpet in B♭ minor. Be sure to bring your lighter so you can wave in the air for the encore.

Maybe we could get Alex to come along. The music is generally better.

Hopefully not working that day. If I am and can't get out of work maybe I'll sail down to saddle bag for the concert, b-flat is a great key for kelp.

Having not heard the alternatives, I suspend judgment on "better", but it's possible I may show up, depending on the state of the day job at the time.

I might bring one of my kayaks, possibly my folding baidarka

Ooh yeah, Alex, bring a kayak. Let's do the circum-Cypress trip after the Messabout in kayaks for a change of pace. I bought a rudder kit to fit to my old Coho for kite sailing, and it will need to be tested out. Also, Tim won't be done with the Great Hvalsoe yet, so there's that.

This sounds like a great time. My wife and I will try to make it and trailer our Caledonia Yawl up. Here is a pic of her rowing with the TSCA of Fort Bragg, Ca. I've rowed some in that boat too. I hope to find someone at the event to help me learn to reef my C.Y. mainsail.

Can anyone identify the design of the small sailboat with the name "Eagles Egg" seen in several photos?

    Thanks,

I do believe that is Lee Baxters little pram. I think it's a Nutshell.

Yes, that's Lee Baxter's boat. It's a take-apart pram, but I don't remember the make. Shoot him a PM maybe.

I hope to make it this year, having missed it last year. I'll probably bring the Caledonia yawl. It has a jiffy reefing system that Robert can check out.

Just found this thread; don't get to People & Places often, I guess...

I am going to make an effort to get up there again, maybe this time with my Dion Swampscott with leg o' mutton rig.

Eagle's Egg is a Chameleon bifurcating dinghy designed by Denny Greene. Built it as tender for my 26' Calkins Bartender.

Kind of nifty, fits in the back of my compact pickup when nested, can be carted down to the beach in pieces, which makes launching without a ramp easier. Rows fine, sails ok I reckon, for it's type. It's especially good at providing "'round the buoy" practice for Rowan.

Now there's a great idea. There ought to be a "Round the Pram" out and back race. Start at the dock, round the pram/buoy/"guy-that-got-thrown-overboard-for-MOB-practice" and back to the dock. Winner earns bragging rights, and has to pick up the buoy. Any non-motorized propulsion acceptable, a la R2AK.
