"And so the seasons went rolling on into summer, as one rambles into higher and higher grass." Thoreau, "Walden"
We've jokingly called our house "Old Vinylsides" for a number of years so "Old Styrofoamsides" makes me laugh.
"And so the seasons went rolling on into summer, as one rambles into higher and higher grass." Thoreau, "Walden"
Reminds me of the Wreck of the Edna Fitzgerald.
This is along the same vein.

I knew a boat named "Dissipated Charlie". It got more than a few odd looks.
There's the plan, then there's what actually happens.

As the less than proud owner of a Snark, I take offense at the old Styrofoamsides gybe.
It is a passable dinghy to paddle back to shore after mooring out your cruising boat that is too small to sleep aboard, and to large to haul above the high tide line, and back down in the morning. I think that I finally have a name for her, after 16 years.
That being said, after a capsize, a Snark is well nigh impossible to reboard, so falls into deathtrap territory.

"The enemies of reason have a certain blind look."
Doctor Jacquin to Lieutenant D'Hubert, in Ridley Scott's first major film _The Duellists_.
That U.S.S. Colander is pretty funny.
For some reason the objectionable names seem to pop up on power boats- bad puns, etc. "Mom's Nu Car" is one that has stuck with me over the years.
Alliteration can fun, as in "Phoebe B. Beebee".

Next election, vote against EVERY Republican, for EVERY office, at EVERY level. Be patriotic, save the country.
Last summer I saw a plastic sailboat named "Passing Wind," near Boothbay.
"near it, a small whale-boat, painted red and blue, the delight of the king's old age."
Lots of the plastic stinkpotters seen in this area should be named as follows: ()

"The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails."
-William A. Ward
There's a sailboat in Newport named " NEVER AGAIN VII"
Extra credit is NOT awarded to the self-righteous.
God save us from "funny" boat names. When I finish the sharpie I may name it after my daughter Kathryn.
Maybe I could put a different name on each side and transom, like Walt Kelly did on the John boats that Pogo and Albert used.
Trick funny or not, I did get a chuckle once out of a modest cruiser named: "After Taxes". But that was not the clincher. That name was resereved for the dingy that was named, "Net Profit"!
I am guilty of a trick name as well as our inflatable Avon raft is named "Haggis".

My montague whaler was named Sea Witch (when I got her I must add) In a small mixed harbour ,maybe 100 boats in total, there were four others.
Quite handy when harbour dues came round ...'...Me? nah .. must be one of the others'
'C'est la vie' say the old folks it goes to show you never can tell
Saw a big hatteras on Friday named "Da Can".
No adversary is worse than bad advice.
Catamarans are the worst, I intend too call mine (not that I'll ever own one) "scatological"
FESTIVUS (a boat for the restuvus) is the name of my Bateau.com GT23, a garvey hulled houseboat/cruiser that sits at a mooring all summer and takes the place of the camp I could not afford.
When you buy a boat, you are faced one of the most important and difficult decisions of a lifetime – what to name it. I once heard tell of a boat named G. Willie Makit. What genius! And might I suggest Betty Kant for the boat docked alongside? Let there be more names like this for the sake of those who stroll down docks reading the backs of transoms. Here is my would-be registry of pithy names.
Bruja Roja (Red Witch in Spanish)
Circe (Calypso being taken)
Daydream (great name but already taken by a January 2016 WoodenBoat dreamboat)
Diamond Cutter
Eventide
Fearless Frobisher
Hunky Dory
Incredible Hulk
Jack Tar
Old Paint
Pussy Footloose (catboat)
Putt-Putt
Sandy P. Bucket
Sea eel que Sea (play on words in Spanish)
Trepid
Turtle Log
Vincible
Wear Away
Will o'the Wisp
Yankee Flotsam
I'm thinking of naming my Concordia if it ever gets re-launched - A Yawl Y'all, Toad Suck, AR
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

I've been around boats for my whole life. A lot of names have caught my attention. Here are a few that immediately come to mind.
Columbia 26 - "Sailbad the Sinner"
Columbia 36 - "The Bench" - Owned by a judge who could often be found "on The Bench."
Erickson 35 - "Paradox" - Owned in partnership by a couple of dentists.
Pacific Catamaran hull number 69 - "Lickity Split" - No further comment offered.
Yellow Malibu Outrigger - "Banana Split" - I must admit to naming this one myself.
Yellow 5o5 - "Lemon Douche" - The owner got a renaming request from the powers that be at LAYC.
Kite - "Hang Two" - No further comment offered.
And my personal favorite.
I-14 - "Heller High Water" - My last name is Heller. It seemed appropriate.
Schooner captains love to get blown offshore!
My dingy "Resinante", with special guest "Resinancy".

My favourite was a racing dinghy called "Two Anchors", just for the pleasure of hearing the race commentary over the PA system

We had a customer that we performed maintenance and repairs on, with a lovely New Zealand built cold molded sailboat named "Oncyte".
He was a contractor, so he could honestly tell people he was un-available because one of his current projects needed him 'on site'
When I was young, the biggest boat at Rochester Yacht Club was names Onaire
We have an old Mirror dingy I'm (slowly) rebuilding that my good lady wants to name "Looking Glass". Hope to have them both up at Port Townsend this summer![]()
A few summers ago, I picked up a SanJuan 21 fixed keel. It was rough. In all the looking at boat projects, it came to be referred to as "the ugly duckling". Well, a few weeks elbow grease and some new paint cleaned her right up. She was no longer ugly, and so became "The Duck"

We had a good laugh a week or so ago. An ali fishing boat, a tinny, called chicken tonight.
All good names my friends. Somewhere plying waters off the eastern seaboard is a shrimper named Gravy Boat. Good name and hopefully a gravy train. It inspired me to come up with several more suggestions.
