Biggest mistake was that I didn't spend enough time leveling and straightening the boat before fitting the transom. My dad came by and noticed it was a bit twisted and once straightened the transom didn't fit as well. Transom is set in wood dust thickened epoxy and then copper nailed on each plank. Made sure to wet out both pieces with unthickened epoxy first for good adhesion.

Replaced a plank in the foreground and one on the far side.

    Nice thread and nice project!!!

Seems that there was any serious damage, so this is a smooth restoration.

We used epoxy and cloth for outside hull.

I was working for a while in a Cedar canoe shop, there we restored few seriously damaged canoes.

One was so much rot, the restoration cost was more than a new 18 ft freighter.

Thanks for posting, I will follow you.

Now I've flipped it and i plan to sand and fibreglass cloth/epoxy the hull.

Finally back to it. Built a new deck out back and laid the boat on it to start atripping the inside. Trying to find the best way... Heat gun and scraper seems to work well but not sure if I am damaging the epoxy on the other side. Chemical stripper is messy but works a bit easier...

Well, I've lost my image posting privileges with a certain photo hosting site- they no longer offer free hosting.

Anyway, it's been a year break from this project- working on my 1964 bus, mostly. Today I dusted it off and put on a gunwale.... Here we go again.

Should have done this before coating the hull but... Stripping the inside with a scraper and chemical paint stripper. Also tried a heat gun but this was faster. I was also worried about the heat damaging the bond of the epoxy on the outside.

Thanks, Jim. I have some kayu batu that I got free. It's a full inch thick, maybe a bit more and in 16-18 foot lengths, salvaged from a deck. I will be using it for spray rails, keel, keelson, and whatever else needs hardwood. It was used in the transom and gunwales too.

Here is my 64 vw- vey much a work in progress but I got in running and driving a bit this summer:
