I am finishing up the restoration of a 1975 wooden Skiffcraft, and I need to get some insurance on it. The major vanilla type insurance companies say it is wood and too old for them to cover, even with a survey. Can some one refer me to an insurance broker or company that insures wooden boats over 25 years old?

My boat is 43 years old and well found so I insure cheaply with Boat U.S. I also survey well and that seems to matter.

A mate of mine has a plywood 16 ft boat. He approached an insurance company for a quote for insurance.

The company went through the normal questions until it came to the question of hull construction.

When told that it was plywood with two pack paint, the insurance person replied that they considered that to be composite construction and therefore would attract a cheaper quote

If you are lucky enough to be a veteran of the armed forces (ours, that is), or a member of a vet's family, you can get insurance through USAA. I know they do boats, including old wooden ones. On everything I have asked them to quote, they have been the best buy. And their claims service, in my expoerience, has been outstanding.

Does this include third party? Or is it just the boat itself. Third party is getting expensive here.

I've been with Hagerty for a while -- no problems atall, understand wood boats. Knowledgeable helpful folks. Yes clean survey does help, as do Power Squadron training course tickets.
