Shang probably told y'all that I'm a wildlife rahabber. Not doing anything now but I do still hold licenses for raptors, song birds, mammals and reptiles with a heavy specialty in raptors. I've trained quite a few hawks and owls to be education birds. I've rehabbed quite a few Cooper's and sharp shinned. They are tough little birds but very fragile. They're accipiters so yes, they will take any bird they can handle. They weigh next to nothing though so that limits them. Very cool to watch.

I am an amateur bird watcher. I had a banner week this week, though.
I saw the hawks (they had a baby), a golden eagle, four different osprey, "my" raven, about 30 turkeys, and a roadrunner.
And the flickers. Gilded flickers nest in my neighbor's yard. They are so pretty.

The sharp shinned hawks take doves and pigeons from our yard. I saw one taken on the wing. Whoa! It looked like that pitch Randy Jonhson threw that hit the bird. We have also seen them making a nest, which is cool.

What fun your work sounds.

My best bird memory remains the bald eagle I came, literally, eye to eye with on a cliff edge. I came around the corner, and he was parked on an updraft, just looking. I saw his eye turn and focus on me, we looked right at one another, less than ten feet apart, then I saw him twist his little fingers, slightly, and he soared away.
Here's the part that sounds the most made up... I got a big old eagle screech when he peeled off. I still get chills.

I'll stick with the straight bourbon.
I have a Great Horned Owl that lives back in my pasture here. There is also usually a red-tailed hawk around, but this one is a dark morph and it's tail doesn't look very reddish. I rode down to Yazoo National Wildlife refuge yesterday. I saw one there with a very red tail. I also saw 7 turkey vultures there. I don't often see them in the Mississippi delta, but the refuge is more like the Delta was before most of it was cleared for farming. It has a lot of swamp land left. In the winter, it gets millions of waterfowl. I saw a small speckled king snake in my garage this afternoon. The smallest one that I've ever seen. It went up under a mower and I let it be. I like having them help hold down the rodent population.
