A new baby arrived at my home this afternoon.

A retired couple purchased this golden retriever for $1600 and soon realized they could not deal with a baby. A woman with the local human society gave it foster care last night and called my niece (doing her rotations now and is soon to be a licensed vet). My niece had asked her to stay on the lookout for a puppy for me. I got the call from my sister this morning at 8:30 am. I met the puppy at 9:00 am and then spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon puppy-proofing my house. He arrived at my home at 3:00 pm.

So now I have this cutey. A male. I do not have a name yet and am open to suggestions. I like Chipper or Chip but am open to other suggestions.

My family got a retriever when I was about 12, a replacement for the one my parents got as a wedding present.

We got him from a fancy kennels, his father had won best of breed at Crufts and there was a flat-coat retriever bred by the same kennels that was the Crufts grand champion that year. Each litter was given an official kennel name with a common letter, and our boy was from the K litter, Shargleam's King's Keeper. We couldn't come up with a name we could all agree on, so he just became Keeper.

Not to worry, a name will manifest. I have never named my critturs immediately, some trait, behaviour, habit, or the like will surface. For instance, a kitten that "followed" me home was born in a shipyard machine shop, coat badly oil soaked, became "Scruffy". My blonde Lab, mostly being a lovable idiot, became "Bimbo". Worry not about a name, he'll figure it for you. Well done, may you have many happy years together.

He sees the vet at 9:00 am Saturday morning. The vet is just 1/2 mile down the street.

I had to wake him up for his evening feeding. Now he is slepping again. I think we finally wore him out. He had a long day. From here at 9:30 am the woman took him to her son's house (just down the street) where he played with her son's 3 other dogs until she brought him back here to stay at 3:00 pm. Since then he has been outside with me, he's been exploring inside my house, and he has been oohed and ahhed over by me, my brother, my sister and my brother-in-law. I'll wake his butt up again in about 30 minutes to go outside to eliminate. I've got a kennel cage set up next to my bed where he, a doggy bed, and his blanket and toys will spend the night. I am early to bed and early to rise while my brother is a night owl, so puppy will have company most of the day every day the rest of his life.

After hours trying to come up with a name for our golden puppy my wife says, “Sandy”. She was looking at the street sign for Sandy Blvd at the time. We mused about it and decided Sandy it was.

He was a wonderful dog. Eight years was too little time.

I brought a 12 week old golden retriever home 40 years ago. I named him “Copper” when my father remarked that his coat was the color of a copper penny. So I’ve raised a golden retriever puppy before. They are wonderful dogs who love everyone unreservedly. They are horrible guard dogs. LOL!

Copper lived 10 years. He had epilepsy and was given phenobarbital every day to control it. He still had a mild seizure about every 30 days. I think those meds are hard on the internal organs. He was euthanized when his kidneys failed and he went into a constant seizure. I hope this little guy suffers no such problems.
