    "Venice’s huge Saint Mark’s Square, once described as Europe’s living room, was submerged by more than one metre of water, while the adjacent Saint Mark’s Basilica was flooded for the sixth time in 1,200 years – but the fourth in the last 20."

    In 2003, Italy began building a massive flood barrier designed to isolate the Venetian Lagoon, the enclosed bay where Venice is located. The project, known as Mose, is one of the largest civil engineering endeavors in the world.
    <snip>

    The biggest obstacle arrived in 2014, when then Mayor Giorgio Orsoni was arrested alongside 35 other people on corruption charges related to the project. Orsoni was accused of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding contracts, but he was absolved three years later.Now, Mose is being held up in its final leg of construction. The flood gates were originally set to open around 2011, but some officials don't expect them to be ready until 2022. As the project continues to stall, many have warned that mold and marine life are eroding the underwater structure.
    It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

    Ouch! Flooding sucks, as I can personally attest. Godspeed to the Venetians.

    On the brighter side, Venice is what...1,000 years old? It will have seen floods come and go in that time. I suspect Venice will live through this one as well. Here's a piccy from the 1966 flood, wherein the water level rose two meters, or about 6 feet.

    There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

    I suspect it'll only get worse. Barring action... Venice will be a write-off. Is it worth saving it with dikes? Is that even possible? Time to bring in the Dutch?

    I think that Venice is sinking about as fast as the sea level is rising ~1-4mm/yr

    I was there a year ago, glorious weather. Two weeks after we came home it was under 3' of water. This seems worse.

    That they can't seem to get their act together vis a vis the flood gates is a damning indictment of the viability of Italian society.

    That boondoggle of a $$$ flood gate that is supposed to protect Venice from flooding was recently on a show called Engineering Disasters.

    It's almost like there needs to be some sort of a penalty for political deception, graft, and malfeasance, eh?

    The press headlines parrot the eco-religionist party line as if this was a sea level rising issue, ready to strike anywhere next. But half a century earlier they had a higher flood when the sea level was a couple inches lower. The $6B that the EU taxpayers wasted on barriers for those funneling wind floods was not only sabotaged by corruption but by constant lawsuit obstructionism by eco-fascists. I can name-call because I used to be one of them in naive youth.

    Venice is miraculous if you avoid the intense crunch of daytrippers. Wander the fringes in daytime, and the main parts in evenings. Carry a good map but don't look at it unless you are really stumped. Be prepared for the worst food in Italy because that is what their foreign customers want. Take lots of boat rides such sto neighboring islands. Their huge maritime museum is amazing and rarely visited maybe because it closes at 1pm when tourists are just getting started.

    I don't know why the EU doesn't work on stamping out Italian corruption like it does with great fanfare in Romania, Bulgaria, whatever. For example IIRC there are some ridiculous tens of thousands of gov't paid forest firefighters in Sicily where there are no forests. Can't stamp out the eco-fundamentalism tho, no matter how many past predictions have proven wildly exaggerated or falsified, and no matter how clearly you can prove that particular painful countermeasures can't possibly make a measurable difference.
