Almonds require massive amounts of water just to produce 1 kilo. It's not a crop we should be growing. It's worse than rice, at least with rice in a dry year you can grow another crop.

These companies will reduce the country to desert and penury yet.
I wonder how much they are offering political parties etc as bribes?

Friend of mine just drove to West Oz and back, she reckons the drought is worse than we know. SA and NSW look like the Nullabor.

I was in Crookwell over the weekend.
It looked fine at first blush, but the stories of the number of people already left the land took me back a bit.
School bus is down to 3 kids, so they are about to lose it. No more casual labour around, farmers offering $300 a day for help. They're watching the news, looking at all the people in detention, and begging to have them brought to their communities. Farm we were on is running at about 30%.

On a funner note, the kids, mostly girls, got to castrate a few hundred lambs and cut off their tails. They wittnessed a badly fly blown ewe get treated. They got to ride around on quads and do a 'bloody hard days work' all round. My 9 year old got his first chance to drive the car, not just steer.. he almost crashed, almost - phew. (Lesson; don't shout Brake! at your kid - they press the nearest pedal to hand......)

Sorry honey - the conservative party gave up on protecting families years ago.

Two inquiries already giving similar recommendations, they'll keep going until they get the recommendations they want - which is that women are liars and men are victims - especially white men, and especially especially Hanson's son. If Hanson gets to do one over on her sons ex, they get votes in the Senate. Tough if families suffer, the Libs truly don't care.

They only care about power, but the same can probably be said for Labour.
Politics is no place for the idealist, the honest or the principled.

So the present disregard for the lot of them is probably well placed, if somewhat dangerous to the democracy such as it is. If it's every man for himself in Canberra, then the same applies everywhere else. No wonder Aus voted with their wallets.

I think Gilllard was probably the best of them. I didn't agree 100% with her but that's life.

I think that’s true, but every now and then there is an issue that simply must rise above politics.

The thing is – this is real harm, not just some wishy washy ‘such is life’ inconvenience. Women are dying, children are really suffering.

You bother about them because they're your sisters and daughters and nieces.
You bother because they will be your grand daughters.

Domestic violence isn't divided down party lines. Though, maybe it is....... which makes it even more sickening.

It really is unfathomable. So unnecessary.

And then there's the racing and harness 'industry', an industrial slaughterhouse is more like it. 7.30 is doing a job on them, thousands of horses abused and slaughtered, despite the assurances fromthe 'industry' that only about 400 are involved. They should be stuffed, the 'industry' closed down, except that governments will be falling over themselves to deny and cover it up. The workers seem to be enjoying the work, especially teasing, electrocuting them and beating them. And the ABC has names and brands, and owners………..

The footage is horrific, the whole owners and staff should be put through the abbotoir themselves. Then the authorities concerned. Right up to the minister. Sadly that will not happen. It'll be the same as the greyhounds. The killed horses are feed for the greyhounds, sometimes grehounds are feed for other greyhounds. Denial all round but the ABC has shown the footage to the NSW regulator, who denies it all so far.

Now he's trying false equivalence, not his responsibility…………… But it is.

Racing industry 'leaders' are claiming ignorance. I can believe that but not in the way they are claiming.

Water management, aged care, horse racing industry and god knows what else. Where are all the regulatory bodies and what the he'll do they actually do because it's obviously not their job?

On a 'positive ' note I heard a farmers group talking about drought vs climate change, and the probability that some places farmed or stocked up to now will have to be abandoned. They were talking of the foolishness of using 30 year old 'good' year rainfall figures as a forecaster for present climate and weather predictions. Aus has been drying out for a few million years, and the process is accelerating.

Re your query re regulatory authorities, some are set up to fail. Underfunded deliberately by politicians being lobbied by interests that donate to said political parties. Or in the case of Racing, are vehicles for gambling, alcohol, fashion, tourist and catering industries. The tentacles go deeper than you might think. Any attempt to close it down, no matter how justified, coud get rather nasty indeed, and those who took the footage and did the research will have to look to their own safety.

The subject of Soylent Green and watching racing being equivalent to watching kiddie porn is coming up with callers on radio.

On illegal arrivals by plane, I don't think either side can claim any moral high ground as the figures show pretty much an upward trend.

True, I noticed years ago the tactic of setting up a service with much fanfare and then gutting it. My little stint as a volunteer with the community center was an eye opener.

    Stolen from Epoxyboy.:
Oxford University researchers have discovered the densest element known to science

The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks.
Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact.
A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years.
It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.
This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration.
This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass.
When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.

I've been there - long after it was the Girl's Home - it became a women's prison - helped get the Women's Action Plan formulated and funded. Hopefully that type of institution won't reappear.

A firm called GoFarm is collating ground water rights in northern Victoria (the Katunga aquifer) now holding 17%, there is no transparency as Comercial i Confidence rules apply and no one is sure who 'owns' the water. The aquifer has been dropping naturally for a decade or so. Out on the edge of the Nullabor properties have no surface water this year, and will have to deepen their bores to survive. Given reasonable conditions the timescales for replenishment of this 'fossil water' is 10.000 years plus.
The concept of private ownership of 'fossil water' disgusts me and should not be allowed.

Climate change won't be taken seriously until people start to suffer.
Nothing seems to change unless people suffer. When they suffer, they tell their story. When enough of the same story is being heard, we accept change.

We like to think we live in a science culture where hard facts inform actions.
    Nope.
We are still verbal creatures. Humans are an Oral beast. We live in an Oral culture.

In response to today's "headlines" in major Oz publications Morrison responds in typical disingenuous dishonesty saying "No Australian is above the law". For this alone, he and his government deserves a good electoral slap in the face! Too much apathy and ignorance for that to happen.......so if a correction is not called for by the electorate I'm hoping the agitation shown in the pic below will count for something.

Nobody is saying anything about anyone being above the law - what is being said is the laws are stupid (dangerous).

4 corners tonight. The Gobbo affair. The Victoria police have spent millions trying to stymie any enquiries but the High Court stopped that. A couple of police commissioners, and as many in the next few lines of authority that you can poke a stick at. Question is will any copper or their lawyers fill the cells of the 'alleged' crims that will be released as a result of these revelations.
