At a social event today. Chatting with the girlfriend of the son of one of my mates. She works in a bakery in a well to do suburb. A van came by with its usual delivery of cleaning products, including hand sanitizer. As the driver was at the back door of the van a member of the public assaulted him. Knocked him to the ground. Grabbed all the hand sanitizer he could and ran off! Pleased to day he was caught. It's starting to get crazy out there.

    .......my niece is a pharmacist:

2 parts vodka, 1 part aloe Vera gel, a few drops of essential oil and voila...hand sanitizer!

Tried it, tastes terrible. I think next time I'll leave out the hand sanitizer.

I see the ARL reckon that the virus might put them out of business. I'd say they aren't the only ones with that problem.

    That's certainly lowered the tone!

So, today, we went to the supermarket to stock up, not too much, but enough. Pretty much everything except toilet paper was available. Ms T wanted some hand sanitizer so she had to buy that from that counter where people go to buy cigarettes. Two tubes.

But now she wants to try Hallam's niece's vodka recipe. She's nervous about her mother who's still living with us.

Even in regional Gippsland, neighbour said that at Aldi on Saturday people were just scooping everything they could grab int their trolleys, and there are some very disturbing video's of supermarket fights about. I think that some people are very scared and feel helpless. And some of rupert's headlines do not help.
But our racing fleet of nine over 70's today were rather philosophical about it. I decided I'll at least start in the club races from now on and I quite enjoyed mysel, apart from dodging the cat fleet at the marks.

I read in this mornings Herald Sun.....that font of useless drivel and misinformation, that Vic health advised people to go shopping and get 2 weeks supply of food!!
    Turns out he was misquoted!!

I read that the alcohol content of hand sanitiser needs to be at least 70%. Don’t know if that’s correct. Doubt if Vodka is that high. But you can mount a 30mm stainless tube 300 long in a saucepan lid and redistill it.

Makes a good sensational headline though, Rupert and his counter jumper editors don't care if it's not true if it sells advertising.

    https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show...sanitizer.html

CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water whenever possible because handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands. But if soap and water are not available, using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can help you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The guidance for effective handwashing and use of hand sanitizer in community settings was developed based on data from a number of studies.Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of microbes on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs.

Why? Soap and water are more effective than hand sanitizers at removing certain kinds of germs, like Cryptosporidium, norovirus, and Clostridium difficile1-5. Although alcohol-based hand sanitizers can inactivate many types of microbes very effectively when used correctly 1-15, people may not use a large enough volume of the sanitizers or may wipe it off before it has dried 14

We’re also asking Victorians to think about buying a small amount of extra food and other essential supplies for themselves, for their pets, and for others they may be caring for.
That does not mean stockpiling – but planning sensibly as you shop.
Thinking about what extra items you’d like in your pantry and by shopping accordingly – for food such as non-perishables like dried fruit and nuts, canned foods and vegetables, beans, coffee, cereal, and pasta.
You don’t need too much, just a two-week supply of food and a 30-day supply of prescription medication.

Looks to me like they were both right. Certainly you could spin it some other way but on a first reading, that’s exactly what it says.
I checked on iview, about 32:30. He doesn’t quote the paper.

    Apropos of nothing.
A sailing club member gave me a couple of bottles of home brewed beer, I had one an hour ago, instant sinus congestion!
Haven't had a reaction to beer like that for years.

Probably better to use ethyl alcohol. The three most absorbent areas of the body are the hands, the face, the scrotum, or so they tell you when you do a spray handling course. You don’t really want to be absorbing methyl alcohol.
ABC just showed a devastated shelf in a supermarket, with panadol having been the target. Surely everyone knows that when you get a fever with a viral infection (adults) you shouldn’t be lowering your temperature unless it it reaches a very high level. I’d think about it at 41. YMMV.

Maybe they think that they won't be detected? Or maybe just in denial, or maybe just more illogical panic.

Hadn’t thought of that Jeff. I suppose we might see temperature monitoring at street corners like China, but I thought they had nearly disregarded it as an effective screen.

There will be a measure of terror as well. There will be many people looking for support. At a time when religious solace might well be needed the churches may be closed down.

Victoria declares a 4 week state of emergency starting immediately. Renewable…………….

There is conflicting official advice, at least one person I know has not travelled or had knowing contact, has the symptoms, but doesn't fit the criteris for a test. Hence he's been turned away.
