A violent exchange that saw drunken Papua New Guinean naval personnel fire up to 100 rounds of ammunition at *asylum-seekers and staff on Manus Island began after detainees trespassed on to navy land and threw rocks at staff who asked them to leave, a witness says.

The witness, an Australian staff member on the island who declined to be named, said it was “only a matter of time” before an incident such as Friday’s occurred, amid rising tensions between PNG locals, defence personnel and asylum-seeker inmates at Australia’s processing centre.
Last month, a 28-year-old Pakistani refugee was charged over the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Lorengau, and in January another asylum-seeker was arrested and charged over the alleged assault of a 19-year-old student.
The witness said tensions were inflamed last week when three refugees from the Pakistani and Afghani communities allegedly led the five-year-old son of a navy member into the centre “for purposes unknown”.
The child was reportedly found and returned unharmed to outraged parents.
PNG police yesterday confirmed in a statement that “a group of drunken soldiers” had “rampaged” through the detention centre, “firing several shots into the air and indiscriminately assaulting policemen, PNG immigration officers, other service providers and asylum-seekers”.

Good grammar does not necessarily make a competent politician.

The PNG police chief denied this version today, saying the child was hungry, was taken in a fed by refugees and Navy staff then escorted off the camp.

No explanation given for the shooting .

Nonetheless, this story still has legs, and we cannot believe anything that comes out of Manus, the PNG authorities or the Federal government at face value. The actual truth may not ever be known.

The story from the Oz would have covered the PNG military but they shot it down. All very strange really . Dutton is left holding the left overs .

PNG police dispute Peter Dutton's account of Manus detention centre attack

Papua New Guinea police have rejected claims by Australia's Immigration Minister Peter Dutton that concerns for a small boy led PNG soldiers to attack the detention centre on Manus Island.
Mr Dutton said the incident — in which PNG soldiers fired shots into the centre — was triggered over concerns for the safety of a small child brought into the centre.
Mr Dutton suggested Manus residents feared the boy had been sexually assaulted.
But Manus province police commander David Yapu said Mr Dutton was referring to an unrelated incident in which there was no allegation of sexual assault, and no concerns for the boy's safety.
"If there was a sexual assault, a formal complaint would be made by the parents for the police to pursue investigations," Mr Yapu said.
Danger not over on Manus Island

The attack by alleged PNG Defence Force members on the Manus Island detention centre follows increasing friction between asylum seekers and locals, and many fear worse violence is yet to come.

A 10-year-old boy was brought into the centre, the senior inspector said, to be given food some days before the attack by the soldiers.
"He was given some fruits by the residents in the centre and then he was taken out again," he said.
"So there was nothing done to him and also there was no official complaint by the parents of that small boy."
Asylum seekers in the centre said the boy was begging for food at the centre entrance and that staff were aware that he was brought inside to be fed.
They urged the Australian Government to release CCTV footage from the many cameras at the centre, saying it would show their account was correct.
Mr Dutton's office declined to comment.

Dutton's having his own 'children overboard' moment.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Party is showing its slip with moves to replace Kelly O'Dwyer in Higgins with Peta Credlin over changes to rich peoples' super.

It's a shame that the Libgnats are so awful, since it means we'll have Bland Spittoon as the next PM, barring any really bad zingers.

Well Kelly despite being a lawyer is not the smartest stick in the woodshed it must be said, but she's been a faithful follower of the party line on just about everything even when it makes her sound ridiculous. Peta might have some ideas of her own I reckon and not be backward about putting them forward, the Libs should think very carefully. But of course if O'Dwyer is dumped then it will show just how strong the right is.
Mal. may not last beyond the next election, if till then.
A very great disappointment, to himself as well.

Credlin is Abbott to all intents and purposes, so that would make it two Abbots for Mal to combat. No good for him.

With Turnbull as prime minister we still have all the negatives of an Abbott government – indeed Turnbull is so desperate to prove his conservative bona fides he’ll even go further than Abbott did on issues such as 18C. And on other issues where the hope was he would change direction, such as climate change policy, he steadfastly sticks to Abbott’s path.

At least under Abbott there was a hope that perhaps Turnbull would become leader and put an end to the politics of divide and debase; that he would end the style of politics that sought to use terrorism to justify policies that carry the taint of racism. But no. Now even that – admittedly small and misguided – hope is lost, and the conservative rump of the Liberal party is more rampant than ever. The announcement on 457 visas was a prime example of how it has all gone wrong.Done without anywhere near the proper level of consultation, the policy change was a perfect case of a government’s political solution making the policy worse.

Yes Turnbull, the great hope for intelligent government, is now arguing that changes which inherently make it more difficult for people of different cultural backgrounds to become Australian citizens will enable our multicultural society to be “more successful”.

It’s the type of logic you use when you have to make up a reason to do something that has no need to be done.A look at the document outlining the proposed changes also shows just how false is the entire premise.

I see Dutton is defending his seemingly false assertions re the disturbance and shooting on Manus.
"I have information that you do not"

Local pollie says it was over a dispute re a sporting venue, the business of the 10 year old boy and fruit was days before, and innocent. He was begging for food.
BTW, 'officially' the processing centre does not exist, they are living on a Naval Base. But it is staffed and funded by Australia still. There is evidently CCTV footage available, but not released.

But 40 inmates face charges of some sort of another. Tensions are high.

    What a mess.

Dutton doesn't know how to say, "I was wrong". Despite all evidence from the local police that he is.

Strangely PNG is asking Australia to release the footage while Dutton is saying it's up to PNG to release the footage.
