    Very interresting.

    In my opinion the fluits were the first "modern" sailing merchantmen. Designed to take as much cargo as possible with as small crew as possible while being good seaboats and decent sailers. Of cause there was lots and lots of development waiting to be done but this was the starting point.

    Fluyts were certainly the first documented tonnage rule cheats that we know of. The extreme tumble home and narrow main deck meant paying a lot less harbour dues than less freaky vessels.
    It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
