Anyone know of the Sloop Spray?

In 1998 my wife and I attended the Victoria Wooden Boat Festival and came across a charming bright hulled sloop named spray. We really liked her interior layout. Now that I'm restoring our sloop, I would like to connect with the owner of Spray. Anyone know of this boat's where-a-bouts? I suspect somewhere on Vancouver Island, BC Canada. But where? Your kind assistance would be appreciated.

Captain Joshua Slocum Nova Scotia born, with family roots in New England. On April 24, 1895, at the age of 51, he departed Boston in his tiny sloop Spray and sailed around the world single-handed, a passage of 46,000 miles, returning to Newport, Rhode Island on June 27, 1898. This historic achievement made him the patron saint of small-boat voyagers, navigators and adventurers all over the world. His book, Sailing Alone Around the World, became an instant best seller. It has been translated into many languages, and is still in print today. His vessel Spray, which he rebuilt himself from a derelict hull, has been copied by hundreds of boat builders world-wide. In the fall of 1909, Captain Slocum left on a voyage to South America and was never heard from again.

Yes, I'm aware of Slocum's famous "Spray." Quite a fasinating story of his travels. However,not the same boat I had in mind. Sorry for not making this clear. The sloop I'm looking for is bright sided (at least in 1998)with a teak laid deck and is on Vancouver Island, BC Canada. Very nice interior which I would like to have another look at. Thanks anyway.

Sorry Geo I wasn't being flip its just that there are probably ALOT of bright sided teak laid deck sloops that may have traveled to Vancouver Island, BC Canada 4 years ago. All I was trying to allude to is looking for a sloop named Spray is sort of like looking for Pedro in Mexico . Can you give any more info - LOA, designer, rig set up?

Ok, this is a lesson posting for me. I should have been more precise instead of positing the questions to the world. The sloop Spray that I am looking for is in Vancouver Island, BC Canada. I've reports from a shipwright to that effect. I was hoping to connect with a Canadian on that Island who knew her. Sorry to bother the rest of you. Please go on to other posts. Thanks

Sorry to be slow on the uptake here. I attended the 1998 Victoria Classic Boat Festival, but I'm not much help about the vessel or its owners. My buddy here was a judge and he remembers a bright sloop from Quadra Island, a Lorne class McGruer boat. Is that the one you mean? What size was she?

Now, how to find 'em. You might try calling the Victoria Real Estate Board 250-385-7766 to see if anyone involved in the Classic Boat Festival would be able to help you find the people.

Hi Barb,
Unfortunately, details are pretty sparse. She was between 30 to 34' loa. Facing the Empress Hotel, she was to the far right next to Reality? That 12 meter rebuild.

I contacted the real estate board. They don't have that boat in their database. I've also contacted a festival judge, Hugh Campbell. He didn't recall the boat but is making an inquiry for me.

By the way, love Sidney. Spent a month two summers ago hanging the planks on my boat. Hugh did the work. If I find Spray, I'll have an excuse to come back again. Thanks.

My guess is that the boat you saw belonged to Keith and Brenda Battersby of Sidney, B. C. Keith works for Jespersens (who had "redone" REALITE and built our MAGIC, as well.) Sadly, for your search, she has subsequently been sold - I think back east. If you would like to follow up, you might give Keith a call at Jespersen's (250)656-2581.

I'll give Eric a call to see if Keith is still there. It would be a shame to lose such a pretty boat to the East Coast. I hope that Keith kept some pictures.

Let's see. Magic, were you at the Seattle Boat show last year? A schooner with light blue trim below the gunwales? In which case your boat had the cool yellow cedar deck and most comfortable seats. I think you told me that Bent fell asleep upright transporting the boat to the States. If so, I enjoyed visiting with you. When will you be in the Northwest again? I would like to take a closer look at her interior construction if possible. If not, please disregard this banter.

Yes, that was MAGIC. She is currently wintering out under her cover in Sidney, B.C. and we plan to return to her full-time, in April. We hope to spend next year in the NW, ranging up along the northern BC coast during part of the summer and then returning to the WA/BC area for the fall.
