Black Bess replica - the tyres are different.
Original built by Alan Cole (my father) and Doug Whiteford in a Sth Melbourne back yard pre WW2, winner of the 1950 AGP.

1939 Ford V8 Special ‘Black Bess’ - This car depicts the very basis of Australian racing car manufacture. Based around that great Aussie icon, a Ford V8 utility, it was built by Doug Whiteford in 1939. This second hand vehicle was stripped of every last utilitarian vestige and converted to a pure racing machine. A coat of black paint gave it its name ‘Black Bess’. Its debut was the 1940 Lobethal New Years Day race. However an early retirement followed by a blown engine at a race in Albury W.A. brought an end to its pre-war racing career. When Doug returned from war service a, new Mercury (Ford) V8 motor was installed which was modified numerous times, benefiting from American ‘hot rod’ developments. From 1946 until 1952 the car was virtually unbeatable. A win at the 1950 Australian Grand Prix in Nuriootpa ensured ‘Black Bess’s’ place in Australian motor sports history. In 1954, at the Australian Grand Prix held at Southport, ‘Black Bess’ held third place for much of the race before a forced retirement. It continued to be used in local races, but by this time was no longer competitive against the imported European racing cars. The car was tracked down, recovered and restored before debuting at the 1977 City of Sydney Trophy.

One of these days I've got to find my box of photos during the mid 80's vintage racing events at Road Atlanta. Circa 1984-87, people were driving, if not in anger, in a mildly perturbed manner cars that are mostly too valuable today to risk on a racetrack.

I've got a box of photos somewhere of cool cars like 917-910-908-904-911-356 and my favorite Porsche of all the RS-60 (below), Can Am McLarens, Lolas, Cad-Allards, DB-2s, Ferrarris from the 50s and 60s, Jag D-types, E-types, GT-40s and Mark IVs, GT-350s, etc...

Scanning them would be a chore!

In 1988, I had the pleasure of being overtaken by John Surtees, who was driving a Mercedes Benz W125 - and to quote Richard Giddings who was also there, and has written about the event, "he wasn't babying it".

The Mercedes museum had brought it to Adelaide for the Grand Prix and Surtees drove it in the Climb to the Eagle. This from the Climb to the Eagle website:

The idea for Climb to the Eagle came from John Blanden, who in 1985 decided to hold a car run in conjunction with the first Adelaide Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Sporting Car Club got behind the idea, and it soon became one of the highlight events of the Grand Prix weekend. Cars would leave from the track, and drive through the city to a morning tea at the Eagle on the Hill hotel. And some pretty big names participated over the years – Sir Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio and Sir Jack Brabham just to name a few
The Board of the company I was an Executive Director of at the time had decided to do its annual strategy session in Adelaide... and strangely picked the GP weekend to do it. We hired a room at the Eagle on the Hill hotel for the strategy session on the Friday The Lotus team were staying there too btw, and there was no shortage of lovelies of all kinds (metal and otherwise)

The Climb to the Eagle passed us as we drove up there... Bugattis, etc, etc.... but the highlight was hearing Surtees approaching from behind, watching him scream past us in a sweeper. I got to follow him through one corner... and he was gone. I was driving a Series 3 XJ6.... unfortunately. I don't think I've ever driven anything that could have stayed with him though.

Definitely a highlight of my time behind a wheel.

Another old Mercedes on the Climb to the Eagle

A couple more images of W125 Mercedes. A car that Peter Giddings drove at Laguna Seca

He thought he was getting clutch slip... but the Mercedes mechanics pointed out, correctly, that it was wheelspin

and with a Talbot Lago behind

Here's a shot of an MG, all crossed up in the "Around the Houses" street race in my home town of Alexandria Bay NY back in the 30's. Long before Watkins Glen, A.Bay was the birthplace of NY sports car racing.

That JAP in #1 is very steam punk to me. Way cool. But my favorite two will always be the XK120 with Brooklands screens, and the Aston DB4 Zagato.
