I want to build airplane lifting wheels into my boat Im building, but dont know how

My old boat got too small, so I found some wood dad was hiding and Im building myself a new one.

I want to be able to pull my boat out in different places from where I launch and walk about with it, so I want wheels with me.

My brothers canoes ones didnt float when he rolled his canoe.

If I build some into my hull, I wont lose them.

Im building a sort of Mirror Dinghy type boat with a centreboard as I found some rigging off one in the bedroom.

Before I start building the tanks, I want to work out how Im going to fit my wheels.

Would anyone have any Ideas how I can fit them?

Here's an amphibious canoe that uses the wheels as paddlewheels with the stern wheel being a rudder. Making the wheels retract like airplane wheels may be more complicated than you need. Maybe they can do double duty for you as leeboards or something.

How far do you want to tow her?
If a short distance then a small wheel will suffice but if over a longer distances or soft ground then bigger wheels are essential. i would attach 18mm ply brackets to the stern that hold dinghy trolley wheels. use wing nuts so they can be removed or inverted to hang above. the ransom.
i did see in pbo someone who had built a boat roller into the skeg .

Took me ages to go through that thread. The wheelbarrow dinghy was on page 15 of 17. Hadnt seen one before. Its not quite what I want, but its got some Ideas in it.

Searched that and read about transom wheels as well as the centreboard wheel. Not very good with metal.

If your wheel(s) is/are near the middle of the boat instead of at the transom you will likely gouge the transom bottom when you lift the bow too high. Put the wheel at the stern and you have a better chance of moving the boat around by hand or bicycle without damage.

Ive tried having the wheels at the back before on Good Idea and put it on the scales. The wheels got 1/4 of its weight - each, but I ended up having to lift half of it. If the back of the boat starts hitting the ground.....Ive found out where dad hid a sheet of aluminium.

He gets really grumpy when I feed it through the bandsaw...

Your wheels need to go further forward and they need to be the same size as your bike wheels. I pulled a canoe behind my bike as a kid, about 4 miles to the lake one way up and down hills. You need a frame T and two bike forks. On the cross member of the T drill or bolt the tubing to attach the bike forks, my dad did that. Hang the canoe below from the axel and tongue, there needs to be some play in it don't strap it tightly or it will bounce badly. Now they have trailer hitches for bikes, in my day I just lashed the tongue under my seat, stop slowly. I used chain link fencing hardware and pipe (top rails, two at 8') where they fit together I put a screw in. This gives you about 4/5' of space between the bow and the back wheel of your bike, better for turns and trailing behind.

I turned the contraption trailer upside down and lashed it to the canoe, Sometime I'd pop the front wheel off my bike and load it, I did flip it, never lost it. I used 27" wheels from a 10 speed bikes (and forks) the skinny tires, not real good in the mud or sand bars, but I was a strong kid. Now, those mountain bikes and tires might be better, they also have shocks in the forks.

Okay, I worked at a bike shop as a kid, so I scrounged parts and bout the frame (with dad's help). Look behind in the trash at some bike shops, a fork can be slightly bent at the head, it won't matter much mounting as a trailer.

Got older (16) tried towing it behind my VW with it lashed to the bumper, a cop gave me a warning ticket, had to disconnect it, go back and get my bike! Something about no hitch, license plate, title.....whatever. Good luck with your project, not sure it really flies though....

Fears of losing it following a roll? Just secure it around a seat thwart. When you want to move up to another boat, the trolley is there to follow you.

I'm thinking hydraulic aircraft wheel struts with watertight sealed wheel hatches. This would be more hydrodynamic.... A little heavier all in all, but the coolness factor would offset that.

For a non-powered dinghy, at a reasonable cost, the wheelbarrow idea is more feasible. The folding bit seems more trouble than it's worth.

I'm thinking you could go with large diameter quick release wheels, like from a mountain bike. The attach points would be up at gunnel height-a bike front fork attached horizontally to the gunnel. You'd remove the wheels when you put the canoe in the water, and would need an alternate attachment point to stow them, so you don't lose them if you turn turtle-maybe one each end of the canoe, I'm guessing you don't use that space, and dont want any weight there. The wheels will look odd, but not be a problem. I was thinking stow them horizontally, but vertical could work too. It doesnt quite fit the aircraft style retractable element of the design brief, but I think it would serve the purpose well.

The power to retract the wheel assemblies come from Hydrolics! the same hydrolics are used to drive the wheels, they dont go very fast 5-10 mph...

"little Idea" is just too funny, if this is real it is awsome, I cant wait to see the boat!

The only real answer to this question... and it has been said above, is a light weight dolly with wells apropriate for the ground they have to roll over, I have used skate board to cary my sunfish and windsurfer down my street to the water, thats pretty light and portable.
I use lawn mower wheels for my 12' cat boat and the gun punt, slower than the skateboard but better over the sand and rocks at the foot of the street.

I will build another folding rudder, so I dont see that folding wheels should be much more difficult. I just need to build it strong enough to stop it falling to bits.

I watched one of those come into the slipway, its front wheel came up out of the boat and over the front, and without slowing down, the boat came straight up the slip and then squatted so a lady could get in, before doing a U turn and launching again. Coolest way to launch a boat. Wish I could find some hydraulics too, but I dont think dad has any hidden anywhere.

Ive found some plastic 150mm wheels that I think are big enough for my boat, so I want to use them as they wont rust. Ive already used them to build a trolley that I used to help mum move flats, so I know they can take some weight.

It would take a huge amount of battery power to run those hydraulics. Nearly all boat motors are running hydraulic tilt and trim. This isn't a whole lot different. Battery power is most likely the source, recharged by the outboard.

Mr Captain gave this boat to Big Idea, My brother.

It had a big hole in the bottom and lots of little holes.

It took him months to fix it.



Took us even longer to work out how it worked.



Big Idea keeps hitting things with it and almost always has several holes in it.

I cant sail my boat, the one I made when I was Little....Littler.

Im too big now.

So I want to build a bigger one.

One like Big Ideas so we can go adventuring.

I was looking for something to play with when I found all this plywood in the gazeebo on dads new bench - the one hes going to kill us over if we damage it.

Took some serious begging and an agreement to keep my bedroom tidy for a whole week!




I spent some time measuring bits of Bigs boat....




and cutting out butt bits...



Im cutting along the line with my knife so that the jigsaw wont splinter the wood....



Hes screaming about me looking like I might cut his table in half.
