Thumbs up Kiwi Summer Boat Porn 2013

Been a while since I have posted some Kiwi summer boating porn - I returned today from the Mahurangi Regatta, snapped 100's of photo's - a real eclectic mix. Some of the best can be seen at the links below. I also ran into JohnB at the beach BBQ last night, almost did not recognize him - he looks like he is getting ready to be Tom Hanks double in Castaway II.

Make sure you come back, there will be more posted in the next few days

A few pix to tease you.

thanks Alan. by the way what happened to the log race? did the sea conditions put them off?
we did not race this year for the first time in about 15 years.
second re JohnB, someone needs a hair cut.
will be looking forward to seeing his pics later. gather he went about as far north as you can go and stay coastal in NZ

CYA members have very low interest in any event that has the words 'Log Race / Rally' associated to it. We have also surveyed the CYA launch owners re racing at the MCC regatta & had almost zero interest, most view the weekend as a family cruising event.

There has not been a Log Rally for a long time. The last launch 'race' at Mahurangi was in 2010 & was a 'Mark Foy start' race around a laid mark. Since this event we have run else where 6 similar races & the interest (entries) has dropped off with each race. We now have more people organizing the events than participating.

The thinking is that this is a combination of several factors:-

    1. there is only a small % of launch owners interested in 'racing' & those that are, are now a little 'been there done that'. There is very little skill involved :-)
    2. if the handicapping is done well the outcome of the racing is very predictable
    3. the only way to win is to tell porkies e.g. supply inaccurate performance data
    4. unknown vessels (non CYA vessels) have a better chance to win as we have no accurate performance data to handicap them by
    5. the price of fuel is a factor to a high % of our members

An other (major) factor to consider is the reluctance of the MCC to have launches traveling at speed amongst / near yachts & other craft.

So at the moment racing at the regatta is off the CYA agenda.

The windscreen atop the cabin is interesting. It doesn't look like there's a second helm on the cabin top. I imagine there's a hatch that the helmsman can stand in so he can steer with his feet?

    .
Correct, a common later addition to a lot of 'sedan top' launches. Some do it very well, others.................. need attacking with a chainsaw

understand what you mean re log races and interest. as a sailer I will admit that in light weather the wakes can be somewhat troubling. however we do like the extra variety that the launches bring to the event.
Yes Dads the one with the beard, he was pleased to be recognised and his mate Gary got a bottle for oldest skipper.
he was off to rangitoto on Sunday then coromandel, barrier, Merc's and back to whitianga. had a couple of south islanders crewing so he he was giving then the tour.

ps are the cya launch owners still looking to have events to encourage new members and share experience?
