Re: Plywood boat rebuild
Personally I would not be comfortable with just epoxy to repair that split.
I would either cut out the split section and scarf on a fresh piece, or, have some steel welded onto the rudder support bracket so that it extends further forward where you could drill a couple of fresh holes and add bolts into good wood.
Or better still weld some tabs onto the sides of the bracket and then you could through bolt them sandwiching the split wooden keel (repaired with epoxy) in between.Aloha, KenComment

Re: Plywood boat rebuild
well, I used West System epoxy to glue lower piece of wood, and was going to fill the rotted part of upper area with mix of 105 resin, 205 hardener and 404 adhesive filler...but after reading Harbormaster's= suggestion I think I will be going with cutting the rotten part out - along the white line - and fitting a fresh piece and epoxy it in.........I think that will make the keel strong again.........I just got this Drill Guide by wolfcraft off Amazon........good enough to guide the drill straight....it's good the use centerdrill to be in the right spot...than go ahead with the drill guide - especially if you are using larger diameter drill ( about 5/16 and larger) to start the hole.....larger diameter drills tend to wander off course2016 kayak Mill Creek 13Comment

Re: Plywood boat rebuild
The more I look at your boat, the More I like it. Do you know the designer, or if there are plans available?
Thank you.Comment

Re: Plywood boat rebuild
is the rotten bit really rotten? or just worn around the holes.
The length of scarph in the "white lines" is not very long, but, if you do make it long long, then the problem comes up of hitting vertical bolts.
I would not hesitate to fill it with 403, ( better for this than 404) and bolt her back up.
You do not need to fill it in one go , better to do a few batches, or use tropic hardener , to prevent heat bubbling.
the boat looks to be in pretty nice shape!Comment

Re: Plywood boat rebuild
Boat was build by gentleman from Olympia WA back in 1956....I don't have plans or even designers name. I just asked his niece to find out if he remembers anything about that.....I will let you know Geoff2016 kayak Mill Creek 13Comment
