Took some photos of the Ulan fire from my back yard yesterday- smoke formed storm clouds at a height of nine miles, generating lightning and looking quite spectacular. So far it's burnt out more than 150,000 acres. This time yesterday there was a cute little village called Uarbry not far from here- today it doesn't exist. JayInOz

Steven - you guys really got hammered, eh? Were the winds as bad as expected? I'd heard 40-50MPH during the storm in Midcoast.

I got to drive through the same storm - Vermont to Ohio. This was in Ballston Spa NY - right at the start of it:

I'd say hammered is about right. It's still pretty windy but you can't feel the house shaking like last night. I'm about to go out to try to fix the snowblower. If I can't get it going properly I'll borrow a neighbor's I hope. More pics soon.

Our deck has disappeared ; the post caps for the railing even. The dog was pretty confused when she had to go out to pee.

This is a cool place Duncan, imagine you are there. There is very little that defines cold for me better than saltwater ice. Hope you get some relief soon. / Jim

Great pictures guys! Love the live feed Jim! I do know that a good old blizzard can be a right PITA, having lived in Ames Iowa for six months, but this heat is really mojo sapping stuff. Animals out in the heat over the weekend were dropping dead from organ failure, including a whole colony of native bats which are significant local pollinators. Stock losses in the fires over the weekend were really devastating for a great many people as I'm sure Jay would be able to attest to. It was so amazingly fortunate that no one lost their lives in some of the infernos that raged across the state of NSW considering the size of some of the fires.

Anyway, the idea of snow and a nice little log fire inside a snug house is really quite attractive. Tomorrow is supposed to below 30 c which will be a relief if it actually does turn out to be real.

(20 below freezing maybe?) A stack of good books and a hot wood stove with the rest of the house blocked off can be memorable. I can recall one year, maybe '62 when the snow was so deep and the snowbanks were plowed up so high that it was impossible to see another car over them. Everyone tied bandanas to their radio antennas to avoid crashing at intersections. Those old AM antennas were tall!

Well I'm sure glad I got the snowblower working. Even with that was a fair bit of work.

I even got the youngun to climb up to the cricket between the boatshed and house and shovel that out. That left a ten foot deep pile in front of the boatsshed that I had to snowblow away.

Finally got some new snow last night. The old snow after a few weeks was getting dingy, icy and dirty.

Ditto. I just shoveled it. It's wet, heavy, and melting fast (although not fast enough to avoid shoveling), so I am optimistic for a good morning tomorrow.

My son sent me this one from Colorado last week. Jet enjoys the snow, despite having lived most of his life in Sydney

So it’s still coming down but we did get out and clear up what had fallen so far.

Sadly, the Dogwood out front didn’t fare so well overnight:

The way the snow landed on the back of my truck was pretty cool:

Our neighbor down the road has two large draft horses. They have a small barn to go into, but they prefer to stay outside no matter the weather. Rain, snow, -20f temps, there they are, standing outside in the pasture.
As for snow, we've got 15". Nothing to get excited about.

Reminds me of the sadistic fun I used to have when I lived in Victoria BC. Mea culpa.

Thanks Skip, I feel so much better; the office sent us home today at lunchtime (unnecessarily imo) in obeisance to today's snowstorm.

Brutal! I couldn’t take much of that. I don’t know how you guys can stand all that heat.
