Thread: Repairing deck and cockpit framing question.

Default Repairing deck and cockpit framing question.

I recently took over repairing a crocker plan 125 called Tamera. the framing is mahogany and the deck and cockpit over the engine were removed to lift out the engine. My question is, can you repair the beams with dutchmans if there are a couple of small sections that are bad but the beam itself is solid. I was planning to drill and dowel all the old screw holes as well. Is this advisable?

We need more info. Are the bad bits on the tops of the beams? What proportion of depth or thickness is bad?
There have been debates on the best way to deal with screw holes on here in the past, try a Google search for the relevant threads.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

The bad sections are on the top about half way down and about 6 inches wide. There are a couple of bolt holes that go through and are three quarters diameter. the screw holes are quarter inch diameter and half inch deep. The beam is 3 inch by 3 inch.

If you have lost half of the depth of the beam to rot, and the beam is only 3" square, you are better replacing the beam, or at least scarfing in a decent sized new section with long shallow scarfs.

Fix it so that the next time the engine comes out , cutting the beam will not be nessessary. Bolt a beam alongside.
Three quarter inch bolts in a three inch beam?
