Default Plans? "Sandy" the tender for Annie.

I'm looking for plans for the tender of Annie, Fenwick Williams 24 ft. gaff Yawl.
The tender was designed and built by Bill Peterson. I wrote to him over two weeks ago and have not received a response. There is one thread here about Annie and other references about her but I haven't found anything on her tender. Would appreciate any help or advise.
I don't know if Bill Peterson is still with us.

Thank you for any light on the subject.

What are your capacity needs for your tender? Do you plan to have sailing capabilities? Will it use an outboard? Will you need to stow it onboard or tow it?
What are your own building skills if you plan to build it yourself? Do you prefer a pram shape for the sake of capacity? If it is to sail, do you want the spars to stow inboard? Do you prefer a hard chined hull or lapstrake construction?
These are just a few questions that you might consider so that we can be of assistance to you.

Jay, Thank you. I'm looking for the plans to this boat. Yes I will build her. I'm not a boatbuilder but have been a professional luthier for over 40 years accompanied by an extensive boat building library which I've studied over my lifetime. I'm comfortable that I can build the dingy though would sure like to have you folks looking over my shoulder! Capacity needs, two adults, say 370-400 lbs. Length is an issue. If I can arrange finances I'll build the F. Williams 24 ft gaff yawl as well, with help from a boatbuilder. This boat can carry a tender on board. I'm interested in the Peterson design because it was meant to go on Annie. I don't know if he designed her to sail, a small compatible rig would be an asset. There's only one photo of the tender I've seen in WB's book published in '82 and in the article on Annie in WB. I don't know what issue at the moment. That photo shows the tender from the stern, she's a lap strake punt.

Stephen here is the Barrow Boat that is the tender for our H28 Ketch. It is 8' loa and is about as small as one can go with a tender that can affoard a reserve of safety. I have designed tenders as small as six feet but the capacity to carry two adults is a challenge in balance to both the passenger and skipper.
Here is a picture of the Barrow Boat that I have. It sails well, carrys an appreciable load and is easy to operate and sail.

My all time favorite pram is the 10' lapstake L.F. Herreshoff tender. This boat is too big to be carried aboard most small cruising boats and so would have to be towed. Even so, it is one heck of a nice pram! As a Luither, I sould think it would appeal to your sense of balanced design and craftsmanship. There is plenty of opportunity for a person, such as yourself, to execute their skills of wood working! I do a bit of instrument work as well and, am a player of classical stringed instruments.

Speaking of prams (and continuing the hijack of this poor guy's thread) I've been trying to find out where this shapely design can be found. It was built by the Apprenticeshop (or someone who learned there) a while back and lives at Rockport Marine. The A-Shop draws a blank on it. Anyone?

Jay, I've often admired L.F. Herreshoff's 10ft pram but didn't remember that it's in Gardner's book which I have in front of me now...food for thought! WB's article on Annie is in WB #41 with the photo of the pram I'm looking for. Murray Petersons's son Bill designed her apparently because of the close ties of Annie's builder with them and Fenwick Williams. As I said above, I have not received a reply from Bill Peterson regarding the plans and was hoping that someone out East might know about this. If I strike out then I'd be interested to find an appropriate tender that would fit on Annie's deck and be easily towable as well. Barring that, I'd then look for a towable traditional pram with a sailing rig. Your Barrow boat looks great.

I know several people have posted "How to put photos on the forum". Could someone point me there?

    Thanks, Stephen

Matt Joyce has an Annie, he posts as Matt J on here, but has not posted in a while.

For photographs' you need to post the pictures on a hosting site like flicker and then copy the URL into here

The boat lends itself very well to a sailing rig. I have read of one that was scaled down to 8'. That might be an option. However it should be done by one who knows how to scale down without losing the stability of the original design. I have one in my shop that is waiting for me to rescue it.

Jay, I'm reading John Gardners chapter on the Herreshoff 10ft pram. It would be fun to build. We're wintering on Salt Spring Island and the place has a workshop. I won't be able to start a project like that this year. Maybe next. I have some instruments to make there so that'll take up the bulk of my time. I probably could get a "quick build" project done like Bolger's June Bug to have something to get out on the water. Though I was hoping to find the plans for Annie's tender.

Thanks for the info on Matt Joyce, I'll send him a message.

That is a great place to winter! Never been there but read the book "Once upon an Island". If you decide you want a full set of plans, they are available from the plans dept. at Mystic Seaport.

I do have one of Annie's sisters. I don't have the tender. Our boat was modified by FC Williams prior to build to allow greater head room and comfort below. The house was extended to just aft of the mast, raised and bulwarks added to balance the whole; hence we've no space for the tender.

OTOH One of the ideas that hangs in the back of my mind is bringing her back to the original design on deck thereby creating room for the small tender. I think it was a good idea by FCW.

All that said if anyone finds the plans; PLEASE post here. I appreciate the offered plans above, but for *this* boat the goal is for a very small tender that would fit on this boats deck. So imho the goal is FCW's original tender for his 24' gaff rigged yawl. Failing that, Gartside has a proper pram design at 7' more or less, and I'm contemplating that build... When I find time. I do believe it'd fit on deck correctly.

Sorry for the delay; I'm stupidly busy and rarely have time to get here.

Matt, Thanks very much for the post. I'd like to know more about the modifications...would they be beneficial without lengthening the house?. I'm also curious about FC Williams' original steering arrangement. Does yours have it? If so, is there concern for longevity? And if not, how is the steering done on your boat?

I understand she's a relatively comfortable sailer considering her size. I'd like to hear your comments over all. Changes to the rig, etc....I'm not asking too much! Oh, and pictures?

Stephen, if you search the forum under "Rarus" you'll find pictures.

I found two. It seems odd, the only photos of Annie are those in WB # 41 and in the book published in the '80s. I just did a search for Rarus, came up almost empty. I've learned NOT to search here for anything you want from here. But the Mendlowitz photos of Annie are wonderful!
