Having been raised along the Mississippi River downriver from New Orleans, I crossed the river many, many, many times aboard the car ferries operating in New Orleans, then downriver at Scarsdale/Belle Chasse and further down at Pointe-a-la-Hache, LA. Each ferry had one or more within ready reach for energencies. The brass holders and the red fire ax always caught my eye.

I never learned from a man who agreed with me.
The old-timey hawser tugboats that I've worked on usually had an axe back on the towing deck, useful if the barge put the tug "in irons," in which case there was a pretty short time window on cutting the strop and releasing the tow. In such a case, it's good to know EXACTLY where the axe is kept.
