Thread: Copper Rod Hardness

    Default Copper Rod Hardness

I have plans for a 14' lapstrake dinghy that calls for 1/4 copper rod clenched on bronze washers for the stem keel assembly. Does it matter what hardness the copper is (e.g., soft, half-hard, full-hard)? Thanks for your help.

I prefer soft or half hard copper for my own clinching work. Hard will often result in fracturing of the peaned surface of the rivet. I also use a hollow planishing punch to finish the heads in such a manner as to smooth off the surface. This avoids snagging on clothing or skin.

One other question - Does it matter what type of copper rod (e.g., C145, C101, C110, etc.)? Thanks.
