Overall damage still being evaluated; collision not combat related, says U.S. Navy.

they machinegunned the tanker when it approached too close

machinegunning something as big as a tanker would be pretty futile... I thought that was obvious

I thought they'd given up ramming as a technique when subs got too big.

Do as you wish, doesn't bother me. But you might, in future, hold your cursor over the thread title for 2 seconds and that will reveal the first line of the thread contents.

I vote to not to delete threads unless absolutely necessary (when that would be, I don't know. Royal decree? Saving the world from alien invasion?) so let's keep both.....I won't 'bump' mine either.
But I'll add this quote.......and I was being sensible and everything.

Well when I was on Ranger we jig and jogged , still hit the damned tanker. Captain got relieved of command , it was a , ah interesting night right after the collision. Life goes on.

When a USN ship hits anything , it's pretty much a done deal , it's our fault. I think isn't that a general rule of the sea , any Man-O- war takes the blame?

The Navy ship should have a more highly trained (and more numerous, not that that would always help) crew. I think they get held to account by their 'higher-ups' no matter what......in peace-time anyway.
The last big whoopsie we had down this way was when the Royal Navy parked a destroyer on a reef at Lord Howe Island. Pretty sure the captain lost his job and he wasn't on watch at the time.

The tanker would be constrained by depth of water and manoeuvrebility. OC of the USN vessel would now have an "interesting" career path.

^ Dunno mate, my "OC" comment means that on my understanding anyone who commands a force element/unit under abt 150 pers is, over that is a CO. Navy may be different (of course). By "interesting" I refer to a coloured tab on a pers file.

Wouldn't the OD get canned as well as the skipper?

HMAS Melbourne managed to take out two destroyers in her lifetime. The HMAS Voyager and the USS Frank. E. Evans

It certainly seems more likely that the US ship will have been at fault. Do US warships on deployment in the straits of hormuz regularly display nav lights?

I am relieved that it was not an Iranian tanker.

Depends who had the deck, it was 0100 , BUT they may have been in the Straits , if they where at Special sea and anchor detail the Capt. should have been on the bridge and therefore would have been in charge. If they where at Special S&A and the Capt. wasn't on the bridge , which was the situation on Ranger, the Capt. is screwed because he SHOULD be on the bridge if Spec. S&A is set.

If this ship wasn't in the straits , yes the OOD and the Capt. are both screwed. So it depend is the short answer.
