Default A well thought out 30 footer

I've met Jay and he is oozing with smarts, lots of neat ideas, in fact a great boat.

Lots to like about this boat. And she's pretty too!

He's upgraded/refurbished her a lot since he bought her back. A few years ago she was for sale pretty cheap after having been donated to some outfit in Block Island (?).

Are there any pics of the boat showing its entire profile?

    I haven't been able to find any. . .

There were articles about her in the December '92 issue of Downeast Magazine and April/May '92 issue of Maine Boats and Harbors Magazine. The first article has a picture under sail, while the second shows lines and layout.

Size of the hatch (particularly width) might concern some (incl me)

I believe Petrel is the only one built. I'm going to the Maine Boats show today and will report back after I look at her there.

Lucky devil! I would love to go to a nice boatshow about now. I know we are in the drought of the century and all that, but it has rained here for about 40 days and 40 nights and the mildew is creeping into everything! It's nasty down here.

We got a few photos but she wasn't entirely visible (on an outside dock) and they are no better than those in Charles Doane's article. I went aboard but Jay Paris wasn't there to talk to. My recollection was that he designed her as a maxi-trailerable that could be shipped in a container with all her gear (maybe the trailer also) and rigged without a crane. She has sweet lines and interesting features as noted. Very well finished out now. Another Airex foam core boat designed by him was a very interesting yawl or ketch at 50' or so. Sleek and fast with a centerboard that adjusted fore and aft and may also have pivoted on it's pin for more lift. Built maybe in the seventies by Aeromarine? My memory may be faulty on that though.

I liked the 'fork' that the Rocana stows into to keep lines from fouling the tip.

Even with the fog and a splash of drizzle the MBHH Show was good. It's well laid out, easy to find your way around with the guide and guideposts. A nice relaxing time with knowledgeable vendors who have really gone all out to create welcoming, impressive booths. Some of the home furnishing/furniture booths would make nice home offices just by themselves! http://www.maineboats.com/online/boa...atshow-gallery

The self tacking boom looks interesting. I don't quite get why the block for the sheet is so far forward, maybe he just puts it there to get the sheet out of the way at rest.

Just back from the show and I gotta say there's nothing wrong with that boat that an extra foot of beam and 4 inches of headroom wouldn't cure. What a cramped, overengineered nightmare of gewgaws. Almost no side deck space or engine access, and you couldn't walk two steps without tripping over some bit of excessive rigging or sharp cornered storage space.

Try as I might, I couldn't figure out the need for a mystery winch in the middle of the bridge deck. Sorry Gareth, to me, this is a boat only an engineer could love. I'm a firm believer in KISS, and this boat is anything but that.
