Default Yet another pocket knife question .

I've got a birthday coming up and my dearly beloved wants to know something, anything, I'd like !

A decent corrosion proof pocket knife comes to mind, I've had stainless knives and they were rubbish and have therefore confined myself to good carbon steel for a long time but It looks as if stainless has come a long way .

Can I have your recommendations for stainless folders, preferably with attachment for a lanyard ,I also quite like bright coloured handles, it makes things easier to find . Said knife must be capable of holding a good edge and be around $100 or less with shipping.

So far the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 looks good,http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Spyderco-...f#ht_776wt_948 but I'm open to all suggestions.

Picking a knife is intensly personal.

For myself, in the folders I rather like the units that are as flat as possible, just stainless and without the thicker and more comfortable to hold handle. However, depending on your work, the handle may be a good thing. On my Myerchin fixed blade (one from their first year of production) the faux ivory handle has served me well for boning down seams when making Granuaile's sails, for example.

I also do not like serrated blades, but again they have their place if you spend time cutting through nasty polypropolene.

Thanks Ian , these designs are all new to me , my standard knife is a small Mocara sheath (I've had it 50 years) but it's carbon and I want something happy with salt water . A non serrated blade as I wouldn't know how to sharpen a serrated one and want it to be as general use as possible. A bright coloured handle to make it easy to find.

I've carried a Spyderco Endura for several years now. The steel in the blade is not stainless, but something called VG-10, and it's absolutely rust and blemish free after much hard and careless use. It holds an edge like no other knife I've owned. The blade is full flat ground, the scales are G-10, with full liners and a flawless lock back.

I also have one of the Spyderco stainless marine folders that I carry on my life jacket, but it's not much of an everyday utility knife.

Lots of good options above, but you have to ask yourself, "What am I going to use it for?" While it isn't at all an esoteric knife, I have to admit that from the day I got it, I have never used any tool more than my Leatherman Wave. It lives in its case on my belt, which I wear whenever I'm working on anything. The only thing it lacks is a marlingspike. I do have some nice blades that I've acquired over the years. The gentlemen's pocket knives, which I used to never leave home without, now languish in a drawer because I can't take them through security metal detectors, which I encounter nearly daily in my line of work. I use a razor sharp high carbon steel fixed blade for rope work and such, when I'm doing a particular job, like splicing and so on. But, day in and day out, I reach for the Leatherman on my hip. Not exactly a "pride of ownership" conversation piece, but a damn handy all around tool. "Multi-tools" usually suffer from trying to be all things to all men and doing none of these well. Not so the Leatherman. It keeps a good edge for a long while and is easily sharpened. The other tools also work well. Having a blade in your pocket is one thing, but a pliers and flat and Philips screwdrivers, files, even a saw, really come in handy all the time.

I love my Kershaw. It's served well for maybe ten years now. If I ever loose it, and I have money to burn, I'd consider one of these: http://boyeknives.com/products.cfm

I tried to buy a Spyderco, and they won't ship to NYC. I'd have to have it shipped to a friend out of the city. I probably could have an assault rifle shipped to me though. Go figure.

The Axis lock used by Benchmade is so strong and safe IMO it is superior to all other folding knife locks. My favorite feature is the way the blade can be retracted with a subtle flick of the wrist, getting the sharp edge out of the way while handling materials with both hands.

Peter, I've had a Spyderco since I started at Paspaley Pearls years ago and would highly recommend one to anyone after a good robust, easy to use and easy to maintain knife!!! Mine is a 2/3 serrated edge and when sharp it will cut through 80mm black polly line with ease and I dived with it and subjected it to all sorts of abuse on shell encrusted mooring lines countless times and the worst that has happened to it was breaking about 2mm of the sharp pointed tip, which has worked out to be a bit of a blessing anyway after sharpening it to a slightly rounded tip.

Mind you I have cleaned it after each use as I clean all my dive gear and I have a heart shaped ceramic sharpening rod for keeping it honed, the various curves of the heart shape being suitable for sharpening the serrated part of the edge.

Also the thumb opening and the locking blade make a very useable knife for quick and easy single handed use when you are usually hanging on to something like rigging or an anchor/mooring line with the other to stop you getting swept away on a heaving deck or under water in a fast running tide.

If you've already found a Spyderco knife that you like, personally I'd stop looking......

    Wichard's knives are interesting:

You can even get them with a glow-in-the-dark flourescent handle to make sure you can find it.

I keep a glow in the dark Wichard with the shackle key and spike in my ditty bag. It's a good knife, but the stainless doesn't hold as good an edge as my Kershaw.
