Is not joining Facebook a sign you're a psychopath? Some employers and psychologists say staying away from social media is 'suspicious'

    By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
    PUBLISHED: 21:44 GMT, 6 August 2012 | UPDATED: 10:16 GMT, 8 August 2012

Facebook has become such a pervasive force in modern society that increasing numbers of employers, and even some psychologists, believe people who aren't on social networking sites are 'suspicious.'
The German magazine Der Taggspiegel went so far as to point out that accused theater shooter James Holmes and Norwegian mass murder Anders Behring Breivik have common ground in their lack of Facebook profiles.

On a more tangible level, Forbes.com reports that human resources departments across the country are becoming more wary of young job candidates who don't use the site.

Normal: Facebook has become so pervasive in this culture that not having a profile is considered 'abnormal'

The common concern among bosses is that a lack of Facebook could mean the applicant's account could be so full of red flags that it had to be deleted.

Slate.com Advice Columnist, Emily Yoffee, wrote in an advice column that young people shouldn't date anyone who isn't on Facebook.

'If you’re of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn’t have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag,' he says.
Yoffee points out that these judgements don't apply to older people who were already productive adults before social media became widespread.

The tech news site Slashdotsummed up Der Taggspiegel's story about social networking as 'not having a Facebook account could be the first sign that you are a mass murderer.'

Loner: James Holmes, the accused Colorado theater shooter, does not appear to have friends and did not have a Facebook page

It points out that Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 people and an unborn child and wounding 58 others at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and Breivik, who murdered 77 people with a car bomb and mass shooting, did not use Facebook and had small online footprints.

Breivik used MySpace and Holmes was reportedly on the hookup site Adult Friend Finder.
Psychologist Christopher Moeller told the magazine that using Facebook has become a sign of having a healthy social network.

Psychologists have noted that Holmes, along with several noted mass murderers, have lacked any real friends.

And this is what the argument boils down to: It's the suspicion that not being on Facebook, which has become so normal among young adults, is a sign that you're abnormal and dysfunctional, or even dangerous, ways.

I know I started the poll, but I did join facebook to see what it was like and then stopped using it.

Far too much private info can inadvertently be posted there.

I cannot see any good reason, apart from a commercial one, for any one to join the thing. I can however see that employers etc could insist a prospective employee has one as a way of keeping them under surviellance. As I have said before, a prospective police state now will have no need of a network of informers, all the information needed for control has already been posted voluntarily. People are very foolish, but then we already knew that didn't we?

    No, I'm not on fakebook.
I'd rather chat to my mates on the phone. Dont even use skype.
There's nothing nicer than answering the phone and having Betty or Marleen on the other end.
The hand written letter was a lovely thing.
I cant see my grandkids sorting through my stuff when I'm gone and musing over my fakebook thing.

I did FaceBook as a combination handy photo-host so I can post pix here and as an easy way to let relatives and friends see as well. Sharing deep thoughts and emotions on FaceBook is not for me.

Like the Pirate, I joined to see how it worked. Three years later, I still don't know how it works and now I don't wanna.

I'm with him... how DO you cancel or delete your membership and info?

BTW, "employers'' have an ulterior motive re this matter. And "Psychologists"? How many? Who pays? Where from? and given that their occupation is a doubtful one anyhow how much notice should we take? "Normal" is a matter opinion and the medicalisation of ordinary variation has made millions for many, including 'psychologists'.

It has been a great way to share pictures with my kids who live away, a few friends, and my family. Just like in real life I am very selective who I allow as friends.

I resisted joining for many years, finally joined because I thought I should, enjoyed it for a few days and then slowly began to get creeped out by the whole thing. I suspended my account about two months after joining and haven't missed it since. What does that make me?

I joined because it seems like some of my friends like to use it to keep up with each other. Hey, the guy that killed those poor people at the Sikh temple had a Myspace page, didn't he? Does that count?

If I didn't spend my time in a cave cataloging books, I doubt I'd spend all that much time on the computer. A few distractions help me refocus, I find.

I have a facebook page, as well as a LinkedIn page, but I don't post much private information on them. It's useful to shape the result of searches people will do for you when job hunting, or when people meet you. I don't thrust them, so I run them in a virtual box with noscript.

While no proof, if you don't want to socialise, you have a larger chance of being a sociopath. Psychologists look at this in an investigation. More and more of socialising happens online, so that aspect should not be ignored, but there are many other reasons not to indulge in social media.
If at first you fail, you need to expand your sample size.

Linkedin keeps turning up on my email but I have redirected it permanently to spam.

I never was a joiner, but somehow it happened. All my life somehow despite myself I have ended up joining or starting something. And my better judgement notwithstanding, it's still happening.

Hooking up to FB and joining in with scores of old Marblehead childhood friends will be remembered as an important day in my adult life. I left town when I was 20 so it was nearly 40 years since I had had contact with a mess of them. Marblehead in the 60's was awesome.

I'm finding FB helpful. The first woman I ever took on a date (5th grade... the movies) contacted me, after losing contact since she moved back to Scandanavia in high school. Very cool!! We still have much in common, and I hope to visit her and her sweetie on the E. coast some day.

It's also allowed me to keep in touch with several tiers of younger-generation relatives, in a way that I never would have. That's been a joy!

Overall... I find FB aggravatin, a little bit scary, and very useful.

It does have it's uses. I can see up to date pics of my grand kids and follow what's going on with family in NY and FL and friends all over the country. Like any other tool it's all in how you use it.

Keep security tight and don't just friend anyone and it's pretty cool.

If the only people that can see your page are your accepted "friends," potential employers will find nada, so why do they bother?

At that point they'll demand access or no interview and definitely no job. I find it amusing that such foolishness is regarded as 'normal'.
