Default So I tracked oil based primer onto the carpet....

Suggestions on remedies? In the past I have waited for it to dry and then tried to comb it out. The downside to that is I have to let it dry, which means that the boss sees it. Any remedy that I can use before she gets home from work 8 hours from now?

How many times have I said these exact same words to myself. . .

Mineral spirits will get it out but it will smell. Test a bit in an inconspicuous (darn...missed a "u") spot to see that it doesn't change the color or melt the carpet.

If the paint has started to harden, xylene (goof-off) might be more effective.
Escalate to harsher solvents at your peril.

My first try lately has been waterless hand cleaner.
It is excellent when there's white paint on the leather couch.
    Ask me how I know.

Goof-Off... the sooner, the better. All the hardware and paint stores carry it.

    Bob is your friend here.

Ask me about 1 gallon of white ceiling paint knocked off the ladder... That was a long painful day, but at least it never dried.

As has already been mentioned, waterless hand cleaner. Worked for me in the past.

I think I'm going with this - we have 8 dogs (her idea), and they are always on my work-space side of the garage, even though I try to keep them out. I will tell her the dogs stepped in the paint and brought it in with them. I can't rule them out as the cause, anyway, although I'd better clean the bottoms of my sneakers before she looks.

I will also pass along your suggestions to clean up the paint that "her" dogs brought in on the carpet.

2-3 coats of the oil based paint of your choice?

If the carpet is wool, Star 10 paint remover will be a good bet. The liquid #2 is the one to use. But, you will need to take the carpet up and out side. If the carpet is made of synthetic fibers, I don't have much hope for you on this one.
    Sorry,

11:15 pm EDT, I'm still standing. She came in from work late, and I left to a friend's house so we didn't have the chance to cross paths near the carpet. I'll let you know in the am.

P.S. i dry scrubbed the carpet so the paint is diffused and not looking so bad right now.

Diffusion is a classic technique for obscuring the obvious. If that doesn't work, move on to obfuscation. Next comes confusion. If none of those work, Bob's literally your uncle and go back to post number seven.

I'm still here. She is having her 30th high school reunion, so I am under the radar at this point. I have time to further diffuse the paint.

I'd make sure that at least one of those dogs has a primer-colored paw.

I'm thinking either your least favorite one, or her most favorite. If that happened to be the same one, then all the better!
She requires of her owner a custodial obligation and responsibility that has absolutely nothing to do with financial return on investment or annual cost of maintaining and operating her.

This actually happened to me: I bought a gallon of oil based grey porch paint for something or other and left it sitting on a table, in the living room, near the table edge, and my dearly believed spaniel, William The Dog, the greatest dog of all time, came haplessly ambling through. I am sure he was engaged in some sort of important business, like threatening some squirrels, when he spied his mortal enemy, the plastic shopping bag, which he hated even more than a vacuum cleaner, hanging off the table. Out of the corner of my eye I saw him leap at the bag and grab the edge, and the paint can of course tumbled and landed upside down on the carpet. I don't recollect why--perhaps I had had it lightened at the store--but the lid had been taken off before I bought it. A good half gallon collected itself into a mini lagoon on my carpet (which now that I think about it looked kind of like me with a dunce cap on my head), and William The Dog gave me that look which said, There, I killed it, and you are welcome very much. I poured paint thinner on the dunce-shaped puddle and the next day hired a professional carpet cleaner, who seemed skeptical about the dog story. $300 later it was unnoticeable, unless you knew about it and looked at just the right angle...William the Dog also got loose in the garage one day and ate some large amount of UNMIXED DRY PORTLAND CEMENT, which also seemed to have no consequence at all as to his general constitution, and may have even improved it.
