The J Class official website would probably be a good place to start. If anybody knows where to find the rules, they should.

I though the rule was, 'win despite all costs'.

I thought J- class yachts were designed to the Universal Rule, with a minimum and maximum waterline length. They also have a specific sail area measurement rule. And they must be built to Lloyds scantlings with the addition of a specific scantling related to the mast construction and weight.
I never learned from a man who agreed with me.
thanks guys
"Were" and "are", are two different things. J Class racing yachts were designed and built to the universal rule in the 1930's. They no longer are. Today they are built to a set of rules created by the class association. The current rules include things like construction in aluminum (which was not foreseen in the 1930's). Aluminum is required because the new boats are loaded with engines, generators, interior joinery, etc. Because of this (because of Endeavor) the old displacement rule does not work (ie, I don't think any of them are 1930 J's).
They also now race using a VPP handicapping system, no longer boat for boat. And no new hull lines are allowed in the association, only re-creation or copies of 1930's hull shapes. But this is not really true either as they all now have propeller apertures and big draggy props.......

i have designed 2 j classes, one with a canoe stern like whirlwind, and one 41 metres like shamrock, endeavour, but i want to make sure they are within the rules
They are not, they have to have had their genesis in the 1930's.
this is an interesting question Gareth,Olin Stephens was not happy with the new Ranger, the new boats are so different to the originals, its a closed shop because there are so few of them, amongst other reasons,
they can change anything they like
aluminium,microwaves,modern materials
technically if a boat is designed to the original rules, it is a j class, or 23 metre,or 19 metre or 12 metre or 8 metre etc
Why build a J if not to race against other J's? If you want to race you need to meet the rules everybody else is using.......McMillan/Spirit Yachts and S&S have designed a new wooden (cold-molded) J based around one the Burgess/Stephens Ranger hull series.......I'm not clear that it's the lines Ranger was built to.......

if 5 new j designs were built, the old boats owners would treat them as j,s
