Question

Any of ya'll goign to the Newport WB show at the end of the month? I signed my boat up for a slot since I had it in Newport for the summer. Would really enjoy getting together with some other forumites for an adult beverage and boat conversation....

Well, we just gotta know where to find you.
Now a question for Scott. Are we going to have a forum tent again? That will the place to leaving messages.

Booth 928; boat is 22ft mahogany runabout "Miss Dee". Should be hanging around it mostly I think.
I'm living in Newport for a while and have folding chairs, coolers, what-not available, just for planning purposes...

Like I mentioned, I'm living in Newport (at the Naval War College), so I can help with supplies or what have you, if necessary. Beer (Mr. Adams)will, of course, be on hand.
Not sure what else is going on that weekend, but there is always several events around town, especially through the summer...

Plan to be there at least Fri. and Sat., helping at the tent where the family boatbuilding project is to take place. The sponsor of the build-it-this-weekend-and-take-it-home is the Block Island Maritime Institute, a nonprofit educational outfit located guess where.
Now I'm paying my dues as a volunteer. If any of you forumites who are seasoned skiff builders
happen by, and just happen to have a few minutes to spare, we could probably use your skill. We're assuming, of course, that the people who sign up to build a skiff are nouveaus, and maybe clueless as well as toolless.

Looks like we won't make it with SEA HARMONY, I got the new stern tube finally Wed., got it and the engine in yesterday, took the shaft measurement to H&H Propellor and was told it should be ready in a week. They said the stern tube should be two weeks and it was a month. I mentioned this and was told "We'll get it done." If they got it done today there might be a chance of making Newport by Thursday, but I think that would be pressing it for a boat that's been on the hard for 6 weeks. The humidity has been high but not that high. I might get down for a visit.

I plan on being there Friday noon.......It would be nice if we all wore a red arm band...a scarf ...a rag...whatever. ...meeting at the tent is ok but you need to hang out awhile till someone shows up while everyone are out absorbing the show. ...more fun just to bump into someone with a red arm band and say..."Heh do I know you on the internet!"

DON'T FORGET TO SHOW YOUR AAA CARD!...two dollar saving at the gate.

Well, it was going to be a surprise...

I won't get in until mid-afternoon on Friday, but my wonderful assistant/VP In Charge Of Media and Graphic Design (Claudia Fromal) designed these name tags:

Now, mine is obviously preprinted, so feel free to download this jpg file and make your own. It will also make T-shirt transfers, etc. But I've got a couple hundred or so where she just kept feeding mailing label pages into the printer and I'll leave them on the table for folks to grab and use.

Now I trust 20 of you aren't going to put "Dutch" on yours.... But then again, if you're with a brother-in-law or someone you don't like, it'd be the WBF version of putting a "Kick Me" sign on someone's back

See you at the show!

There's got to be some place to land a dinghy on the Newport waterfront (or get a water taxied to), but based on what I've seen of Newport Harbor I'd be a bit surpised if there was anyplace left where you could drop and anchor, so renting (and possibly reserving in advance) a mooring might be necessary, but don't count on any of the above...in my limited sailing in that area I have avoided Newport and gone instead to lower key places like Point Judith Pond...

For the dinghy, try calling Bannisters wharf, the guy whowas manager there used to be the drummer for the Lovin Spoonful ("boom boom" summer in the city "boom boom" back of my neck etc) the owner is the former manager btw (he also owns the wooden Hinckley "Nirvana"), or try oldport marine or IYRS there was a dinghy dock between two of the condo's, can't remember it now, they're all friendly people, Newport is a great place, I only wish I could be there.

I always post this Gary's Handy Lunch is a great diner, opposite IYRS, they expanded about ten years ago and lost some charm. Great food, widest diversity of customers on planet earth (except for maybe Le Select in St Barths).

Are there particular things those of us who are going on Saturday or Sunday should look for?

Any recommendations on parking?

Well lets see....Highlights, beyond meeting up with fellow forumites.

The W-class boats are just spectacular. I think I might have to win the lottery twice to think about owning one.

The smell of pine tar downwind of the Vernon Langille and the Lewis Story. Two old time, honest, robust work boats.

The Apprenticeshop 17' whitehall.

Two Thames river skiffs, one single, one doubles( Peter Spectre where are you?) Built in England, shipped to Argentina, restored in Marion Mass.

Seeing Norm Abrams( This Old House) walkling through the tents, asking him when they're going to build another boat. Not asking how many routers he owns

The 30 (?)Square meter boat from IYRS. Narrow, long long overhangs and a mast that reaches WAY up and then is tweaked into a graceful curve. Looks fast just sitting at the dock.

hard to say what my favorite is. Pictures when I get a chance.

I brought my bicycle and parked about a mile away on Broadway(Rt.138). No parking fees. I was able to go visit IRYS and get a good lunch outside the Show grounds.

I decided to remove the information I posted here from a lurker named John. I felt like I was becoming the middle-man between WoodenBoat and someone who had some negative opinions about aspects of the show (that, after visiting the show I do not fully share), and I just did not feel comfortable in that role.

My policy on parking is to grab the public parking in the multi story structure right by the transportation/information center and hoof it the 5 min to the show.
Food was better last year, I like the walk around set up, but dread getting out of Dodge Sun pm.
If you go, drop by Truth for a beer.

Can we have a report on the big boats?

What of Seaflower? and Pilgrim, her earlier sister? Is Brilliant there inspiring young schoonermen everywhere? These are the happy creations I'd be studying if I could get there.

How goes the 12-Metre sailing?

Lot of Luck as far as parking goes, some side streets have parking untill six pm. after that you need a sticker. Be carefull some streets are resident only.
As far as the show I thought it was very good, well worth the money. Between the book dealers and the tools it was enough. The boats of course are all beautifull.

Yesterday was great and I'm sure today will be better despite my absence.

Adam took his bicycle along and parked a bit away as he has moral objections to paying for parking. We parked in an open air lot just off that road you take to America's Cup Way that aims at the big garage and visitor center. It's about 1/4 mile off, pleasant walk and was $10 for the day.

What a nice show. Kid friendly and all that. I'll admit I wasn't working too hard at the demonstrations. Just oggling all the great work and picking up stray ideas. And chatting with other Forumites, touching the hand of Phil Bolger, stuff like that.

We had the impressionist artist Sam Barber along. Given the five rolls (120 pix) he shot to fix his memory, we can expect a few marvelous paintings to come along in the next year.

My only regrets are that we missed Margo, we could not stay late enough to test Joe's endurance, and I can't go back today and tomorrow.

Thumbs up

It has been wonderful.

I'll make a couple of rounds in the am & then I'm about boatshowed out. I missed meeting you too Ian (and Mary Ellen) and Ned Lloyd, but I have gotten to meet so many many wonderful folks.

The vendors are wonderful, the boats magnificant, and Forumites as well as perfect strangers friendly and happy to chat.

Thank you WoodenBoat!
