    Default Barrique Cup, Cham, Switzerland

This past Saturday saw the 10th running of the Barrique Cup on the Zugersee in Switzerland.

The race is open to any wooden yacht over 40y old. Apparently numbers were down a little this year, but a great day was had by all. We got there a bit late, but the boats tied up at the dock still look pretty so here're some photos taken before the new camera stopped working

Gratuitous boat pron, and I'm sorry I can't tell you much about the boats as I am kind of new to this area.

The foreground (forewater?) boat in the above pic, Undine, is planked tight seam in larch. She's kept on a trailer and leaks like a sieve both on launching and retreval a very fast boat, however, no doubt helped along by her massive carbon rig and lack of ballast, just crew weight to give her righting moment. I imagine she's tricky to sail in a stiff or gusty breeze...

This is the boat I sailed around to Zug on later in the evening.

This boat was built by a guy called Sepp many many moons ago. He's now about 85 or so and a few years ago he bought the boat back form the family he sold it to and restored it. Rumor has it it was the first boat he built.

And a few pics below for the powerboat enthusiasts

This steamer is called the Liberty Belle. The ladies fangled an evening cruise on her as the sun was setting. I helped sail one of the race yachts back around to Zug (about 2 miles around the lake front so missed out on a steam boat ride, but did have a great sail as the evening breeze had filled in and promised a nice sail.

You can read more about the Liberty Belle here at www.liberty-belle.ch

We also went out for a drift, this photo showing the savage conditions faced alone by the skipper.

Looks great, I love the "Y" shaped tiller.

Interesting design Sybilla. There seems some variation in builds or are they not the same class? There are more similarities than differences I think.

For the race there are no restrictions as far as I'm aware, but in general there seems to be a certain style that many of the boats have. They're not of a certain class that I'm aware of but more styled in a similar way. Some have a spar as a forestay which is also used for roller furling the genoa.
But definitely more similarities than differences, the couple of hard-chine boats aside. Sepp's boat (Y shaped tiller) is my pick of them, it just looks good and somehow friendly. it may not have the inlay deck or super high gloss of the others, but it has the right feel.

I really quite like the look of the rounded over sheer/gunwale of Sybilla but it would make hiking out or walking near the edge a little tricky.

It was a very nice event, and the festivities included free beer, not just for sailors but for anyone and everyone who happened to walk past. Good beer, too
