We use powdercoating on aluminum and steel parts for our systems that are located in harsh weather environments. If we're concerned about small nicks in the powdercoat causing problems, we might have the parts hardcoated and then primed prior to powdercoat application. That way the nick in the powdercoat will more than likely not cause corrosion of the metal beneath that leads to chipping and blistering. So far the results have been promising. I'd talk to a coater in your area.
