Default Boat Dogs. Heavy in Pics and Stories.

We all like dog pics. Specially when they're within our wonderful maritime theme. Oftentimes, those great pics come with stories. I'll start fresh here:

Ula was born 15 September, 2003. She takes her name from the Celts. Ula being the Gaelic name for Sea Jewel/DockStar. She had no idea what star of the show meant at this phase...

Mac is a lucky dog— I've not seen dog "foulies" before.

Ruby, a keeshond/collie cross, is keen on floating rivers and running rapids.

In easy water, she reclines and often naps, but always stands up for the rapids. She's been on trips on our local stream, the Big Laramie, and several times down the North Platte and the Green (Desolation and Gray Canyons).

All our whitewater cats have dog decks.

When I'm building a new frame, she stakes out her place early on—

She loves wading and splashing, the wetter, the better—

Lately, she's applied her incomparable snoozing skills to our skiff, a Phil Bolger Gypsy.

I've not taken her sailing yet, but I think she'll like it well enough.

Marlee is not terribly enthusiastic about being on the water, but will put up with it if you can scratch the particular spot on her head that she likes so much and which makes her melt like butter.

Neither of mine will have anything to do with getting in my canoe. wish they would.

small pics from an old cell phone... This is from Piper's first kayak voyage where she was mostly nonplussed, but the Canadian geese did get her attention.

    Got it here: http://myoutwardhound.com/life-prese...e-jackets.html

It cost about $30 with shipping. I tried several upmarket brands such as Ruff Wear and they didn't fit, since she's got a deep chest and a narrow waist, and is short-coupled compared to labradors, retrievers, etc. It's well sewn, and fits her well, with a solid grab-handle, but doesn't have a great deal of flotation.

We use it mostly in whitewater, since a dog in the water will move downstream faster than a raft.

Should have pointed out that the pic of the late Mac was from 2002. Couldn't find anything suitable to keep him semi-dry, so got a local sailmaker to make the coat using a rather porous one as a pattern, but adding a neck and tail flap. The old bloke (he was about 14 in the pic) wasn't too keen on wearing it to start with, but changed his mind when he found he was a chick magnet (canine & human) with it on.

I'll second Chip-Skiff on the Outward Hound life-jacket. Honey had one, Bibi has one. Don't have a problem getting the dog into it - they quickly realise it means a trip in the skiff either to shore or to visit another boat which could well have a "spoiling auntie" aboard.
Murphy's law seems to apply here; a dog wearing a life-jacket seldom falls overboard .

We've had a few boat dogs, here's our current two, short legged, long haired, Jack Russell and a rescue of unknown ancestry with big doe eyes. Nobody gets near the boat unannounced.

They love to swim and the JR especially cannot stay out of the water. The heart of a golden retriever, even dives for rocks. He just lacks the horsepower. They wring out easily though.

Jack Russells have two settings, on and off. You walk them constantly in order to achieve the later setting, which is preferable most of the time. Exceptional boat dogs.

Barley's never been 100% comfy on the boat, but he's gettin' better,

Hooky needed a few nips to get into the sailing mode
