    Default Don't Tell McMullen....

....but i was out rowing my Caledonia Yawl by myself tonight.

It was about a three mile circuit, checking crab pots (6 sea urchins and two flounders ) Tide running at around 3-4 knots against me for half of it. On the way back against the current one of the local tour boats actually came over to ask if I was lost and needed a tow. Oh the horror, I was still back to the dock an hour an a half after casting off.

The tour boat captain was very nice and we chatted for a bit, but it was very clear that he wasn't quite sure what I was about.

McMullen is, IIRC, up on the wild coast of BC braving Pacific swells amidst the islands. I think with Yeadon and possibly Hvalsoe? Big tales to tell when they get back, I am sure...

That simply can't be true. I've heard it so many times here that it's virtually impossible to row the large and unwieldy Caledonia Yawl that kind of distance. I'm sure when the PNW sail and oar sect return from their current outing they will convince us all that your little excursion could not have happened.

My wife and I rowed out to watch a fireworks display in my Flapjack skiff Sat. night. People look at you like you are crazy or something when you row other than to a mooring around here. Oh we did bring the wine and cheese and crackers, Lovely evening . If I hadn't been out rowing that morning I wouldn't have seen them setting up the barges for the private display.

Flounders and urchins in crab pots ain't quite the same as a pot full of crabs. Jim probably has a freezer full of halibut, so why would he think about eating some rasty flounder.

A putting our boats to work thread sounds like fun. In addition to pot duty, I've been thinking about floating yellow cedar salvage logs off the beach and towing them home.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait to give James a hard time.

Wait. . .don't tell me what?

I think it's awesome that you eschew the infernal cumbustions. Them things make you fat.

Ah.. James, I guess it was the rank my conveyance seems to garner in the octaneless club, that I was protesting. Welcome back.

btw- Shouldn't there be a trip report of the most recent expedition of the octaneless club? Enquiring minds want to know.

Jim, I most heartily endorse you rowing your CY. And it's not like I don't like them or anything. I expect that if I were usually carting around a boatload of cute wives and daughters like you, I'd need a bigger boat too. But every boat is a compromise, and having gotten to row a Caledonia Yawl and a Ness Yawl directly side by side back when I first built Dragonfly, I knew instantly that absent other criteria, I would choose the boat that was several inches lower and a whole foot narrower if I wanted to be content to row all the time solo. But don't worry, your Sparrow ranks way, way up there in terms of boats I very much like.

A trip report will be forthcoming as a collaborative effort atwixt AJZimm, Eric the Hvalsoe, Seņor Yeadonator and yours truly, once the salt's been rinsed off and all the pixels processed. And you and Sparrow would have been most welcome indeed to have joined us if only you'd been a few hundreds and hundreds of miles closer.
