England's canals are enchanting! I discovered them while visiting Oxford on our first foray out of the U.S a number of years ago. There, several canals meet, and there is a "turning basin" within a beautiful park, all right in the center of town! I was able to speak with several owners of recreational canal boats and learned that they can be rented- would love to return and do that some day!

My wife, stepson, and I chartered a narrowboat and sailed from Devises to Peusey for a week. We had a fine time and recommend it to any sailor. Little experience required. It turns out that the Kennet & Avon canal, from Reading to Bath, was planned as the first line of defense in case of a German Invasion in 1940.
