Default help me finding the right motor

    Hi people,

I'm planning to upgrade my bench grinder. I have had this HF grinder for years and its time to change the motor.

I want to get a motor with the following specs -
    Enclosure: TEFC
    Phase: 3
    Hz: 60
    Frame: 56C
Have looked at Baldors, andfound one on here that is compatible https://www.mrosupply.com/product/69...eneral_Purpose

What are you folks using and do you like what you have? what do you think of Baldors? what are the alternatives?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jack,
Both Grizley and ENCO sell reasonably priced grinders.
I have a Beldor 8" Bought used. and a grizley 2"x72" Belt Knife grinder that I use all the time.

A 110v single phase 1 HP should do you.
The beldor I have is a well made machine, however, I made a larger table with a slot for a guide.
Beldors are 2 to 3 times the expense. You should be able to find somethimg for less money of fairly compairable quality.

3 phase for a bench grinder? I agree with paul, I'm thinking a 110/220V 1hp for not much more than about $100 should do fine.

I noticed you are looking for a motor only. Do you have an arbor grinder that is powered by an offset motor?

Most grinders in the price range for average shops have spindles out both sides of the motor with threaded ends, one LH thread and one RH thread to keep the shaft nuts from working off. This allows the use of a course and fine wheel, one on each side.

Ummm presumably he is looking for 3 phase because his shop has three phase power. I wish my shop did.

    3 phase is the best...
Costs less, instantly reversible, and it seems that there is more power for a given rating, but that could be an illusion.
I have three phase at work, and at home I use a rotary converter for the Bridgeport, the geared head drill press, and the precision grinder.

    JackDani,

The only thing to be considered and not discussed is the motor RPM. Most general purpose motors are 1800 RPM (nominal). My grinder (grinding wheels are mounted directly on the motor shaft) is a 3600 RPM (nominal) motor. This seems really fast if belts and auxiliary shafts for the wheels are involved. Whichever way you go, the new motor needs to be orrdered with the correct RPM.

    Boat on,

    Joe
