But I thought we should have a separate thread for pictures. We're in our tent now after a nice dinner and a chance to meet all the boats. There was some music by the campfire but things have quieted down now. This is the second year of the boat introduction hour and a wonderful tradition it is. I'll just post a few pics now but if there is something you want to see more of just let me know.

Lunchtime on Thomas island:

Wow! What a day. The wind was even stronger than forecast. What wonderful sailing. After lunch the wind just kept building. Many had two reefs in. Which might have been a good idea for us. We had just one reef in the main and right after a downwind romp through the mooring field at 6 knots we heard an awful smashing noise as the mast step blew apart. We got the main down and limped in to find this:



So instead of a shower and nap we headed off to home depot to get some wood and glue for a new step. Allen haD the tools we needed and we had a new step ready before dinner. Which was awesome, pulled pork, smoked brisket and baby back ribs:


After dinner some hung out by the campfire talking and listening to live music.

Steven -- thanks for the fotos!! As the first Goat Island Skiff builder in the Americas... and an 'approved builder' for Mik's designs... I can't tell you how gratifying and pleasurable it is to see THREE GIS's in attendance. Hooray for Paul, Clint, and Christophe - way to represent!

Yes, a GIS can be pretty fast. Not so much when I sail it, but I've watched Michael Storer sail mine... and it looked like he had jet-packs on. He walked away from the Core Sound 20 I was on... a decently fast boat as well.

The forecast today was for very light air but fortunately for us the forecast was wrong and it blew 10 to 15 all day.

Well the SRR is over but Mary, Chris and I didn't get enough so instead of packing up and heading home this morning we decided to sail here instead:

Wow! What a fantastic sail back from Bar Harbor! We sailed right off the dock and started out running downwind toward Lamoine. As soon as we got out of the inner harbor we realized the wind had been strengthening while we had lunch. As soon as we were clear of the islands we hove to to put in a reef. We were still flying and wondered about a second reef. We figured after we rounded the headland and weren't running downwind there would be less wind for the reach to the Park. That theory held for a bit but as we got closer to the park we realized we would have to put in another reef. It was blowing about 20 knots with some stronger gusts. Even with two reefs in we were getting drenched with spray and occasionally taking some water over the rail. We had to head up in the gusts. Gps had our max speed at 6.8 but we were holding 6 pretty steady. And of course the beach was dead downwind. We did pretty well coming in, soaked to the skin but grinning ear to ear. Now we're on the road, we just crossed the new bridge by Searsport. Steven

Is that Clint in the yawl version and Christophe in the Goat trying to catch up?

Looking at the yawl's boom it appears he's tied a reef in but looking at the top of the mast it doesn't look like the sail could be hoisted any higher.

Another surprise is the bow-down attitude of the Goat chasing the yawl. The helmsman seems to be sitting right where MIK says you should so why is the boat bow down?

Give it some bite to weather and the transom out for an easy exit... looks good. They looked good at the Lake Rotoiti event I went to back in march too.

This was the exception to the SRR, not the rule. Just a pretty picture. ...And there was plenty of rowing to be had by all, to you purists out there.

Sunday was awesome... I bet you had a good sail. We did end up launching in Belfast harbor and sailed out into the bay, which also approached epic status. My GPS showed a 9.1 knot max SOG in the Phoenix III.

Belfast and its lobster was epic, as was the sailing. I actually almost dumped IAZ,P over out by Red #2, the closest I came all weekend. That would have been.... interesting. I saw the Pheonix at 9kts and it looked spectacular, Jon had a huge grin on his face. I do kind of wonder about Bar Harbor and how it would've been awesome, but I'm glad I started for home-- I was cooked! You have to remember, we were working on those boats all weekend while you lounge and splay out on the Caledonia like Roman aristocrats!

Christophe was especially working hard! I was often with crew. My students loved their time with Christophe on his Skiff. I did get to sail solo on day 3 or 2, can't remember, in the AM and it was a hoot. I enjoyed passing many boats and saying hello. My rig is OK, with tuning it is going to be outstanding.

I love my GIS, my SRR friends, their boats, and this coast.
